Claymore, the silver-eyed slayer is only called upon by those in dire need of aid, so when a village is threatened by a monster called Yoma who views humans as their prey send for her, she finds the monster hidden him the most curious place. The real problem for the village is the Yoma can disguise themselves as humans once they have taken over the body of the deceased host, and live among the villagers normally undetected. That is until Claymore arrives as she can seek them out with her super-senses and destroy them as she is part human, part monster herself, and though she can do the job to rid them of the Yoma, the Claymore are not trusted due to their half-monster nature. The Yoma once found, the Claymore leaves, while someone else collects the payment later on her behalf, but one boy, Raki dares to get to know her yet he does not know the fear she gives everyone else, and he goes with her.
He follows her on her journey to find and destroy Yuma, but when Rubel, the man who collects her money hands her a single black card, which she knows only too well of what it means. From the one who brought readers Undeadman and Angel Dendetsu, Norihiro Yagi creates this darkest fantasy series of novels with a twist, the lead character, Claymore/Clare might be able to kill off Yoma one by one, but as she is half-Yoma too, she risks eventually losing her humanity and becoming like the monster she loathes. Unlike most fantasy adventure manga, this one gives readers a different look at the concept of a heroine, one that also bears the faults of the one it hunts. This aspect is what sets this title above most manga in this genre as they are straightforward, where this one has all kinds of twists and turns and explanations when the reader least expects it. The artwork is also different form the norm, Clare seeming like a Joan of Arc figure with angelic hair, exuding her purity, while the other characters are shown as rough as people in olden days would have been.
Claymore will bring readers into a dark time of swords and monsters they can get immersed in.
