Feisty young teenager Nana Komatsu is being told her boyfriend is to be transferred to offices in Tokyo due to company restructuring, deciding their relationship will become a long distance one and unlikely to work for them. Her friend Jun tells her she has been used by an older, married man, who had just tired of her and wanted to move on. Disappointed with her bad choice of boyfriends she decides to relocate to the city and embark on a new life with the possibility of a blossoming relationship with an interesting man. Still wondering whether she will enrol at Naruse Art School among many, she has to decide what suits her. And no matter how many times she gets to grips with another male in her life, she guiltily thinks back to how times were great with her last proper boyfriend, married businessman Takashi, then she meets young student Shoji Endo who is kind, nice and everything a girl would want...but will it last? Nana volume 1 is an excellently illustrated and written piece by Ai Yazawa, author of previous hit Paradise Kiss. Ai aims this novel series at older teens, who have an interest in the complications and troubles of romance, and the gothic punk scene in modern day Japan's capital. Some will notice the punk era band references in this particular manga, and it will come as no surprise Japanese society has realised a lot of western influences over the past few years and taken a lot of what is out there and made it their own with a few changes. The goth/punk lolita movement in music and fashion being one of them. Readers will find this an easy manga to get into, and one they will enjoy to their fullest. This manga has also been the inspiration for music CD's, a video game, two live action movies and an anime. Ai has been the winner of the Shogakukan Manga Award in the Girl's category in 2003, and has been a big seller in Japan, with over 38.3 million copies sold in Japan alone. This comes in 17 volumes so fans will really have plenty to read.
IN SUMMARY: This gives new meaning to two's company - a punk hit worth its weight in chains and safety pins!
