From the creators of Appleseed comes the latest CG anime, Vexille. The title comes from the name of SWORD security agent, Lt. Cdr, Vexille Serra, who has the improbable mission to expose the Japanese nation since it withdrew from the United Nations, and isolated itself from the rest of the world.
In 2057, when the UN opposes its human enhancement and creation of human like androids, Japan, already established as the world leader in robotic technology, pursues high tech national isolation. In 2067, Japan has completed its isolation with a shroud of secrecy.
Ten years later, when Daiwa, the largest Japanese technological conglomerate, makes its move for total world domination by secretly meeting with world officials about its plans, the elite US Navy Special forces SWORD, must apprehend its representative, Saito. Saito has already have Daiwa's plan in motion, managed to escape but has left evidence that flagrantly violates every robotic international treaty that forces SWORD to organize an operation that would expose Japan for the first time, and to verify if the country is developing bio-technology that could be a threat to humankind.
But an unsuccessful plan to transmit data from within Japan that’s lead by Vexille’s lover Leon Fayden, forces her to join up with the guerillas within the walls of Tokyo. They are led by Leon’s ex-girlfriend, Maria, who has become part of Daiwa’s experimental plans for total world domination. Now both must work together to bring down Daiwa and save Leon, and the rest of the world.
Vexille (pronounced Vex-sill) is another Japanese anime CG masterpiece that ups the level in storytelling and visual effects. The story is darker than any other CG animation that has grazed anime, and to make it more interesting, Japan is considered the enemy. The film did come with it share of flaws, but it is more technical flaws that everyone could overlook.
The CG flies right through the screen in this animation. Compared to the first Appleseed movie, it’s more fluid, and shows more emotion in the character’s face. The visuals with the Jags (the side effect of the Daiwa’s plan) are simple but stunning, and it would remind you of the worms in the motion picture Dune.
The English voice actors’ performance in this feature film pulls all the stops to make this film come to life, thus making it FUNimation’s best dubbing in recent years. The soundtrack is another aspect that cannot be overlooked in this film with musical scores from Paul Okenfield right on track with the scenes.
EXTRAS: No extras came in this disc other than FUNimation previews. However, there could be a possibility that the special edition of the Blu-ray version of this animated feature film could include in-depth extras just like what was done with Origin: The Spirit of the Past.
IN SUMMARY: Great CG utilization and a plot that’s dark and entertaining, Vexille is one of the finest CG animation that has come from Japan.
