Two persons, one body, a vampire with wings of crimson. This is Mika and her twin Eru who share one body and one hunger. Her search for peace and to quench her blood leads the beautiful Mika to a pure girl in a Japanese high school, an unexpected enemy in the streets of New York, and a shocking revelation upon her return to Japan. Enter the world of the supernatural lurking around the corner of the everyday…if you dare.

A rich and immersing manga by Makoto Tateno, likely known best in North America for her thrilling shonen ai series Yellow along with Hero Heel and Ka Shin Fu, here offers a different atmosphere, that of the preternatural. A world of vampires and demons, we are given a mysterious and alluring world of beautiful characters, both predator and prey within a world as fascinating as it is dangerous. Mika and her brother Eru are not heartless creatures, but rather shown here with a poignancy worthy of early Anne Rice and Tanith Lee novels. Highlighted by Makoto Tateno’s stunningly beautiful art style, readers can expect to be captivated by both the tale and the artistic beauty.

It is a mystery of only two volumes, yet the story is in no way rushed. The chapters are like stand alone tales, but each reveals a little more about Mika and Eru and the very last chapter of the first volume shows them discovering something about themselves that they had forgotten, or were forced to forget. Their run in with the handsome and powerful Kinsei might be a path that leads to hell…or the road to salvation.

Although Red Vampire is not a yaoi, the manga still has intrigue of many kinds and the people Eru and Mika meet, befriend, or battle, often blur the lines of gay or straight. The story touches upon relations both yuri (lesbian) and yaoi (gay male). And due to the unique state of brother and sister sharing one body, the tale enters into it a distinctive omnisexual breadth and appeal.

IN SUMMARY:
Red Vampire has deadly beauty and compelling intrigue that is sure to appeal to fans of vampire and supernatural tales as well as those who enjoy Angel Sanctuary. Demons, vampires ghosts and fallen angels, it is a world rich with otherworldly to ensnare, bespell
