Admiration, friendship, betrayal, secrets and a serial killer are only part of what transpires in the latest volume of Monochrome Factor. After what happened with Kengo, he can now see shin, including Shirogane. Filled with hero worship for Akira upon hearing about his friend’s role in all of this, Kengo wants to join them in the fight. His first task for the group is to try to solve the case of the serial killer running rampant on the streets at night. A serial killer case proves to be much more than anyone expected, or can handle, as the latest chapters reveal. Using his brusque attitude, Akira throws harsh words at Kengo in order to save his simple and innocent friend. However, another friend, Aya, again proves the unfortunate target of the Shadow Realm when she comes face to face with the killer. Akira races to the scene but only to become the killer’s new target! This confrontation holds the most detailed and involved fight sequence in the manga so far as Akira fights for his life against a shin. When Shirogane sees this shin, he shows a different side to himself. This new facet that he hides raises not only one’s curiosity, but also a sense of danger. Just who is Shirogane really and what is he that he is so powerful? With the revelation of other shin, not just kokuchi, entering the human world, readers get to see more of the Shadow Realm and find out there’s a great deal more to Shirogane than meets the eye. The questions it raises don’t go unnoticed by Akira. He wants answers and he wants them now. But Shirogane is guarding his secrets quite closely. Just what is he hiding? His choice of Akira may not be anywhere near as random as it may have at first seemed. Secrets run wild this volume as well as a look at Shirogane’s enemy – the psychotic Homurabi. The suspense is mounting and the volume ends with Aya and Akira in great danger. The action is charged, the intrigue absorbing and the art remains rich and captivating.
