Project Blue Earth SOS really shines - both metaphorically and literally! Now there’s a talent if I ever heard one: This anime is the kind of show that can bring back people’s faith in the art form, just in case they’ve lost it lately to any of the “beautiful, yet empty” shows that are so many in recent years. It’s one thing to look good, but to look amazing and have plot content that measures up to such visual excellence is another story altogether. Project Blue Earth SOS is visually fantastic - it’s movie quality animation in a television series - you can’t ask for more than that. Project Blue Earth SOS has this certain flare to it that just makes you go: “This is pretty cool – this anime has such a unique sense of style and presentation to it.” It’s like a 1950’s future world with all sorts of other influences that are hard to place, but are all so wonderful to look at. The story is also completely engrossing and entertaining, so it’s hard to know just where to start raving about it yet again with the delivery of volume three and the climax to this series!

In the final two episodes of this six part series, the aliens are altering the Earth’s climate, trying to make another ice age occur and wipe out the humans that are left alive. The human race has to band together to stop them, but first they have to destroy their aerial defenses that block the way to the alien technology that is altering the climate. In the midst of that crisis, the aliens manage to brainwash a large number of people with a radio transmission of a popular Earth show laced with subliminal messages that tell the listener to rise up against other humans and destroy them in the name of the alien race. People attack other people like zombies and it causes general disorder all over the globe. In a last desperate attempt, the alien base in Antarctica is destroyed by the Labyrinth Alliance and the day is saved for the moment. Billy then gets home and realizes his servant and his father have been brainwashed also, so he has to escape to the Alliance headquarters to join Penny and the rest to come up with a plan to destroy the radio towers so that the brainwashing program can be stopped. Just to add more confusion and chaos into the story, we then discover that the alien race was actually created by a human being 30 years ago and shot into space to colonize it somewhere on a distant planet. Going even further, Margaret actually turns out to be the “Master Infidel,” the first alien so to speak mad by her grandfather, who also created the alien race. The aliens capture her and turn her to their side. In a way she seems confused, but on the other side of things she seems to almost accept her alien heritage and feels connected to them after that revelation. After that, the Labyrinth Alliance ready the Universe Knight (their most powerful space battleship) for the final fight with the alien planet as it draws closer and closer to Earth. The captain is killed by an alien, but he gets the battleship to take off to save Earth before he breathes his last breath. As the human forces destroy many of the alien ships and “board” their planet, we discover that the aliens had plans to “breed” with the humans and try to become more human so that they could live longer. Of course the human race does not want to be cattle for the aliens to do with as they please, so they destroy the propulsion generators on the planet and send it spinning into a time warp (black hole) and it disappears with Margaret still on it. Everyone else escapes back to earth and a world peace ceremony is held in commemoration of the Earth being saved from the aliens.

The animation is still top-notch – no question about that at all. The colors and the vibrancy of the animation is just so cool and eye-catching – it just pops like nothing else. It is beautiful feature film quality animation being used in a television series – you just can’t ask for much more than that. If it hasn’t been mentioned before, the music in this series is excellent and even worth buying a soundtrack for – it’s very reminiscent of Cowboy Bebop and the great jazzy soundtrack that anime contains itself. The mechanical designs behind everything from buildings, to machines, to vehicles is all done with more imagination and style than most anime coming out right now – it’s really pretty special in its way. People who appreciate this sort of thing will fall in love with this series right away and will know exactly why. It just shines in so many ways – it’s a pretty cool story with eye-popping visuals around every corner. The finale of the series was nail-biting – it’s quite an epic for such a short series.

IN SUMMARY:
Project Blue Earth SOS is epic in scale and takes us all over Earth and beyond for the final battle against the alien race that threatens to swallow the planet. It’s vibrant and exciting from start to finish – a really fun, imaginative science fiction piece sure to entertain many.
