Things are never easy for the high-strung Watanuki. This boy needs to be kept far away from caffeine. With his gift of being able to see and be affected by spirits of all kinds, his life has been hell. But he learns a new lesson in hardship as the mysterious Dimensional Witch Yuko’s servant. Cleaning, cooking and having to host her sake parties, he’s fed up. But whenever it comes to a new client at the shop, he can’t help but get involved as his better and compassionate nature wins out. That is the true Watanuki and he may have to learn some hard lessons this time, and even perhaps face unhappiness as well as supernatural danger.

An errand under the full moon has Watanuki running for his life. A woman’s addiction comes with a choice weighted with a hefty life lesson. Later, a powerful water sprite demands Watanuki’s services. With Domeki’s help Watanuki faces his greatest challenge yet as he deals with the rain’s wish, a flowers cry, and the fear of the dead. Each supernatural tale serves as both cautionary and inserted moments of quirky comedy. However all of the comedy is done away with in the last episode on this volume. Dealing with a woman and a monkey’s paw, her wishes may lead to doom. Not every story in Holic has a happy ending and for every wish there is a price that must be paid…

Yuko stills stands out for her allure and enigmatic qualities. Although her role in all of these cases may seem harsh, she doesn’t seem to take sides but serves as a constant reminder that people make their own choices, and in doing so, must pay their own prices. If anything, the underlying theme, at least one of them, to this anime is about personal responsibility and taking the responsibility for one’s actions and choices.  Also Domeki proves increasingly interesting this round of episodes. His constant willingness to sacrifice himself for the sake of Watanuki, who has only ever been aggravating towards him, is something of a puzzle. Just what drives the stoic classmate who has mastered the art of deadpan sarcasm? Hopefully later volumes will reveal that along with the question of why Yuko is so very interested and increasingly invested in Watanuki who for all intent and purposes appears to merely be an above average psychic. Obviously there is more there and it will be interesting to see what the anime chooses to reveal and when.

IN SUMMARY:
A broken arrow, fox-made stew, a word game and a moonlit night all converge for a supernatural and dangerous evening for Watanuki in the latest myth-adventures of a boy who is haunted – literally – by the ghosts around him. xxxHolic is an addiction no anime fan can resist!
