Most of the crimes that riddle the vast city of Tokyo are dealt with by the regular Joes of the Metropolitan Police Department. The worst and most heinous crimes are taken on by a single special agent. Her name is Rose Hip. Armed only with plastic bullets, she manages to solve even the most difficult case without any fatalities. Her record and her beauty have earned her the nickname “Angel of Mercy”… Seventeen-year-old Kasumi Asakura may be many things - high school student, next-door neighbour, police assault squad ace - but she's not going to stand still and let anyone take a picture up her skirt, as Shohei Aiba learns firsthand when he tries it on the subway. When he attempts to find out more about this mystery girl, he gets caught up in her search for the serial killer nicknamed the Shepherd - who enjoys carving his initials into young women's mutilated bodies! Asakura's back for more in this action-packed shonen sequel to Rose Hip Zero, and from the creator of GTO! Rose Hip Rose is a great sequel to Rose Hip Zero – you really couldn’t ask much more from a second run at an already fun concept. Hollywood has done its best to exploit every possible combination of people in the “buddy cop” flick – so leave it to the crazy world of Japanese manga to not only find a new strain in the formula, but to also make it work pretty flawlessly. Rose Hip and Shohei are an explosive and hilarious combination in their way – they’re partnership really adds to the overall goodness of this manga. The art style is as dynamic as all get out – if John Woo made a manga, Rose Hip Rose would be it. Fight scenes and shoot outs are fast and furious, and the details are awesome. The attention to detail on the weapons and uniforms is especially noticeable, but really the whole manga is drawn with an expert sense of what needs to be shown here to make the manga a stand-out action piece that will fully entertain readers. It’s nice that the art can sometimes take up really large portions of the page in a large square, making the characters and images much larger. The artist isn’t afraid to do a big two page spread when it’s needed – it’s great to see some larger visuals, and this sort of thing works well for an action manga anyway.
IN SUMMARY: Rose Hip Rose is crime drama on adrenaline – it’s not every manga that can support an Uzi wielding high school girl and a host of insane criminals and make it work so flawlessly. Highly recommended to action fans and fans of the girls with guns genre!
