"I told you long ago that you belonged to me, Guts." - Griffith.

As Caska enters the castle, she arrives to the sight of General Griffith falling to the floor, his wine suspected of being poisoned. The opportunists have made their final move to destroy the hold the Band of the Hawk have on their land, and they feel they have to brake down the morale of Griffith and his men, but they have no idea what will happen if the General recovers.

As the queen of Midland put to good use her plotting, she does this as an intention to keep the purity of the royal bloodline, and prevent Griffith having the princess all to himself. Though she does this, she also sets other things in motion for what she has done.

Guts decides in his heart it is time for him to leave. He cannot stay and fight for Griffith's dream anymore as the weight of it on his mind troubles him so much. Caska finds him leaving one snowy night, and tries to talk him out of leaving them for good, but Griffith has other ideas. He remembered a deal they had three years ago, and Griffith tells him he is his fighter, drawing his sword against him for one final battle to see who will be the victor. Griffith reminds him that three years ago he beat him on the battlefield and now he must win his freedom from him.

As is usually the case in this series, things are not as easy as they may seem, and both fighters are in the midst of a decision to make as Guts does not know the dream he seeks, while Griffith comes into much trouble and pain as a result of Guts's actions.

This fifth volume of the series is on the cusp of a decision where Guts when he was needed most left the Band of the Hawk to fend for themselves. Guts believed he was no longer needed and that Griffith reached his goal already with the princess. Little does he know what happened after his departure.

All the characters are suffering in the absence of Griffith, and it shows in the storyline too. Guts is seen as the one who betrayed them by leaving, while Griffith is in his worst case scenario imagined – a true horror to be in for sure.

EXTRAS:
Interview with Tushio Nakatani and Outtakes make this a wonderful DVD to watch.

IN SUMMARY:
Berserk has been left on a real tough cliff-hanger - this is great edge of the seat stuff!

I can't wait to see the rest of this series as I've been following it from the beginning.
This sounds like one hell of an episode from the review.
