From the creator of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, Dr. Slump is a very stylistically unique manga title with lots of wacky humour and high adventure. You could almost look at it as a pre-realization of Dragon Ball – it’s actually quite interesting to see what the artist/author did before he created his most famous work!

When goofy inventor Senbei Norimaki creates a precocious robot named Arale, his masterpiece turns out to be more than he bargained for! It's parenthood, Dr. Slump style, as the Norimaki household welcomes its newest member, Turbo! Being a parent does have its challenges, as Senbei is learning: changing diapers, escaping alien abductions, coping with Turbo's super powers. But what did you expect, a normal baby? This is Dr. Slump!

The art style is very reminiscent of Dragon Ball, with odd chibi characters and highly stylized people and animals, as well as other creatures. No one draws quite like Akira Toriyama – his style is almost wholly unique in all of its oddness. One of the things he is best at is the showcasing of mechanical design. His manga, including Dr. Slump, always contain some really interesting designs for motor cycles, cars, and many mechanical things that don’t actually exist in the real world. They are always pretty neat to look at – he puts a lot of work into the details of any of these machine inventions. The pacing and flow of the art is very good because it is easy to follow but still manages to be full of energy and ends up being quite dynamic. The flow of the boxes is easy to follow, so the story is just as easy to follow. The characters get up to all sorts of pretty random adventures and daily insanities – everything from sitting down to dinner, to blowing the roof off their own house with a World War II style tank – heck, why not? “Zany” is the right word for this one – it’s good, crazy fun with some awesome visual style.

The author and artist for Dr. Slump is Akira Toriyama, who is quite famous now, but wasn’t particularily well known at the time when he was making this manga. Akira Toriyama’s first weekly series, Dr. Slump, has entertained generations of readers in Japan since it was introduced in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in 1980. A few years later, he created his wildly popular Dragon Ball series, which brought him international success. Toriyama is also known for his character designs for video games, including Dragon Warrior, Chrono Trigger and Tobal No.1. He lives with his family in Japan.

IN SUMMARY:
Dr. Slump is what Dragon Ball fans should be reading, but may not know about. It’s a ton of fun and comes directly from the same creator of all the Dragon Ball series and so many other titles and video games that the artist has worked on. A classic must-read!
