From the creator of Antique Bakery and Flower of Life comes an all new yaoi story filled with unrequited love and the fragile hopes of the heart.

Rookie teacher Ida gives his all at school but his reserve is put to the test when contentious student Kobayashi approaches him. Is it antagonism or love? Despite Kobayashi making his feelings clear, Ida does have a lover. But when Ida’s boyfriend may be dumping him, Kobayashi seizes the opportunity to prove his love to Ida.

This is a bittersweet tale of first loves, unrequited love and new loves. As with all of Fumi Yoshinaga’s other titles, The Moon and The Sandals also explores the many facets of love and life with a rare poignancy. This isn’t a simple tale of love and winning the guy. Sometimes things don’t work out, sometimes people have to move on. This story is as much about losing love as it is finding it.

The story expands to more than just these two characters. We learn the deep-seated doubts and pains plaguing the various people in this story. It is easy to relate to them on some level and empathize with them. After all, we’ve all been there before in one form or another. Everyone sooner or later deals with rejection or a crush that is never spoken. Everyone has heartbreak. Although there is an overall bittersweet tone to the story, it is not one without hope. In the end of this first of two volumes, we are given a sense that perhaps the people in the story will find their place in the world. Everyone longs to belong, in this story we meet some of the people striving to find their place.

The artwork shines with Fumi Yoshinaga’s unique style. Dramatic, the story does contain some explicit scenes but nothing overly graphic. It is a yaoi that seeks to touch the heart with its more mature story telling and deeper romantic depths.

IN SUMMARY:
The Moon and The Sandals is a romantic drama about love: finding it, losing it, and rediscovering it. It has a maturity and depth to the story that is a treasure to discover.
