A roarin’ Western hits the pages of Watsuki’s latest manga creation! From the master who gave us Rurouni Kenshin and Buso Renkin comes a 3-volume tale about quick-draws and lone gunmen in the Wild West! Viu is a 9-year-old who will stop at nothing to fulfill his dreams of being one of the best in the West with a gun. So much so that he’s even entered an arm wrestling competition to win himself a snazzy gun belt. Now he just needs a gun. Wouldn’t you know it, some bad guys drift into the Illinois town and Viu has to fight them! Good thing he picked up a vagrant who turned out to be not so bad with the steel himself. Underdog Marcus may look like a tall twig you can just blow over but he has skill and a right mind about what to do with bad guys like these nasty stagecoach robbers. He promises to help train Viu and together they’ll go to the legendary Gun Blaze West – a place where only the toughest gunmen can go, those with the deadliest skills. And once every ten years the best of the best wins the finest gun piece in the world. You can bet who has his eyes on that prize! The problem for Viu is that not only is he just a kid, there are a lot of nasty adult baddies lurking in them bushes yonder who want the same dang thing! Get ready for some Wild West action the way only Watsuki can deliver! The manga is set in the 1880s and has a very different look than Watsuki’s usual stuff. I’d say it’s closer in style to Buso Renkin than Kenshin. It’s fast-paced with lots of wacky characters and even wackier character designs. Being only a 3-volume series, it also moves the story faster than you can draw a gun. The story jumps five years later where a fourteen year old Viu, now with his training under his belt, takes the special gun with the Gun Blaze West clue on the handle and the torn map piece from Marcus to find the legendary place. He runs into a guy named Will who can use his lasso better than most guys can use a gun. And that’s sayin’ something in the Old Wild West! They both have pieces of the Gun Blaze West secret and parts of the map. They might just join forces if a villainous vagrant doesn’t do them in first. It’s quick draw time and ya gotta wonder if Viu’s hands are as steady and as fast as they’ll need to be to help him get out of this scrape in one piece!
IN SUMMARY: The West just got a whole lot wilder! Fans of Watsuki’s work will want to check this out. If you enjoy energetic action adventure like One Piece then you won’t be able to resist Gun Blaze West!
