It’s more hellacious mystery and horror in the penultimate volume. Things start off with the usual routine. Someone is wronged, Hell Girl answers, they decide to take revenge, and Hajime and his daughter keep failing to save any of the damned. But this time things start to queer in the most wicked way. Hajime and his daughter Tsugumi keep getting involved. The more you play with fire, the sooner you’re likely to get burned. And when it’s Hell Fire, you’d better start praying!

First is a nasty old biddy who tries to make her daughter-in-law into a perfect living doll. Creepy! She’s so nasty it made my skin crawl! But this might be one of those times where even Hell’s vengeance can’t save this girl. Then a boy with mysterious powers sets a trap for Hell Girl. That’s right, it’s Hell Boy versus Hell Girl! You won’t believe this showdown! Unlike any previous episode, this guy actually seems to have HG on the ropes!

After all that excitement, if your heart is still beating, dare to take on a little more? Because there’s a lot more going on. There’s the story of a girl and her dad done wrong by a nasty piece of work of a neighbor and then a gold digging woman who crosses the wrong guy. What makes these episodes different is that the girl is known to Hajime and Tsugumi and in both cases, the whole race to save the people before they damn themselves in the name of revenge leads to an awful fallout between father and daughter. Seems Tsugumi agrees with Hell Girl while dad still believes that you can’t find any peace or satisfaction through revenge. In the tale of the guy done wrong, we find out a little why Hajime believes that so much. We get to see how Hajime first hooked up with Tsugumi’s mother and what went down to tear them apart. Now revenge, or the belief behind it, is tearing him and his daughter apart. And just what is her tie to HG anyway? The penultimate volume heats things up with these two while still keeping a lot of the bigger answers close to the vest.

EXTRAS:
DVD extras include trailers, textless songs, 2 large premium art cards, reverse cover art, and a round-table discussion with Hiroshi Watanabe (Original Concept), Ai Abe (Producer), Masashi Suzuki (Script), and Minoru Yamada (Sound Design) as they chat about the role of the Straw Dolls in the Hell Girl anime and have some fun at Mamiko Noto’s (voice of Ai) expense.

IN SUMMARY:
The penultimate volume sees Hell Girl challenged by a supernatural force and things get worse for the father and daughter trying to stop her.
