On a quest to find a way to lose weight, Usagi and Mamezo get captured by a clan of Kouga ninjas. There she is confronted with the brutalized form of Goemon, also a hostage. She is now being forced to make an instant poison or else they will all be killed. But their captor, Hikaru, seems to have a personal grudge against Goemon. It may be he wants the poison to use on Goemon as his captive test subject!

The latest in the ninja romance adventure sees a mix of brutality, romance, and light comedy. It is a yo-yo of emotions when first, readers witness the brutality Goemon suffers at Hikaru’s hands, get thrown into political intrigue between the ninja clans, and then witness bumbling attempts at a marriage proposal by the end of the manga. The drama starts with Hikaru and continues as a bigger shock occurs when Suzune appears under a different name and we find out who her husband is at last. With the Iga and Kouga sharing a tenuous truce at best, just what could Suzune be doing with the enemy? Is she a traitor to her brother Hanzo? The intrigue mounts this volume and things get overly complicated when Hanzo arrives and Hikaru is sentenced to death for his treatment of Goemon and Usagi. A link between the Kouga and Lord Nobunaga is revealed and the lord’s desire to have Iga attacked is made known as well as his use of the Kouga to do it. The why of it remains so far a mystery. The chapters with Hikaru reach a dramatic point when his past with Goemon is revealed and in a fit of anger and pain, sets flame to a pending tragedy. It sets the stage for subterfuge, danger, and high drama in the manga.

The story returns to its lighter comedic roots when Hanzo goes about researching how to propose to Usagi. This naturally becomes a series of misunderstandings done to comedic effect until Usagi’s grandfather appears, and has a shocking announcement to make.

IN SUMMARY:
Usagi captive, Goemon tortured, and a possible war with the Kouga ninja clans on the horizon, all this and a potential marriage proposal in the latest from this kaleidoscope of comedy, drama and romance in feudal Japan. The ninja romantic comedy gets serious this volume.
