Makoto continues to get weaker and Amano’s warnings more ominous for the heartbreak that lies ahead in the latest volume of Kanon.

Yuichi sees Makoto’s growing frailty and tries to be strong, smiling despite the pain of separation that looms ever larger in their lives. He at last learns the truth behind her appearance in his life. It is a touching story, one that raises other questions even while it answers some of the more pressing ones. What is it about this place that has spirits appear, as if granted second chances, chances to say goodbye. Yuichi isn’t the only one who seems to have spirits attached to him. Amano’s warning comes from her own heart rending experiences of a similar nature. But such a fleeting miracle, to grant the final wishes of those whose lives we’ve touched, is one that bears perhaps as much pain as it does hope, like a sincere smile while the eyes weep. To say hello again is to open the door for the inevitable goodbye to follow.

The other questions it raises is just who, or what, are the various girls in Yuichi’s life. While the first two episodes on this volume conclude the Makoto story arc, a new one begins in the last two involving Mai, the aloof yet beautiful girl who breaks into the school at night. She has a bad reputation and is disliked and blamed for every wrong doing. Yuichi and Sayuri plan a way to gain her more favorable popularity for an upcoming ball. But there, the evil spirits attack and in the aftermath, Mai is the one who is blamed for the destruction that has been wrought.

There’s more with Shiori the sick girl and Ayu ends up staying at Yuichi’s place with his aunt Akito and his cousin. Although Makoto’s mystery has reached a conclusion, Mai and Shiori’s seem to be taking center stage.
