After barely escaping the clutches of Eden, Takeru and Biz’s approach earth with an incorrect telemetry, and land safely in Las Vegas. With no humans in sight, both kids start to argue about what they have to do, until their radio picks up a radio signal that’s being broadcast by Anne Marie from Florida, thus giving them both hope that humans still do exist on the planet.
After learning that they’re over 2, 500 miles away from their destination, both have no choice other than to travel cross-country with Takeru’s tri-cycle that they’ve modified to a two-seater and with Anne Marie’s broadcast to accompany them on their travels. Their journey is filled with great excitement and enjoyment as they see what earth has to offer, but it also brings them chills as they experience what Mother Nature has to offer. However, both are determined to make their destination despite the hardships that they encounter, even when their vehicle runs out of fuel.
Unrelenting on leaving his vehicle in the middle of nowhere, both get lucky when a passing bus full of free-spirited male travelers picks them up. Both are ecstatic meeting humans on earth for the first time. After traveling with their new found friends for a few days, both outsiders must continue their journey to Florida on their own, but not until Takeru hears from one of the men that humans on the moon had perished a long time ago. Takeru replied that they’ve heard that humans on earth have suffered the same fate.
On their own again, Takeru and Biz manage to get to their destination and have an accidental chance encounter with the girl of his dreams that left him speechless, but not before causing some commotion with the town’s people.
FREEDOM 4 has all the excitement and fun as the previous episode, although the fun and excitement on this episode is at the expense of Takeru and Biz’s wild journey. Unlike the last episode that is full of action, this one is full of laughs. There are so many great moments during their cross-country travel, but one that stands out the most is the scene when Biz is helping Takeru rehearse what to say once he finally meets the girl that he risked his life, and travelled thousands of miles just to have the chance to meet her in person and to personally say that “they’re all right.”
On another note, the opening animation was changed in this volume to reflect the midpoint and changes in the story.
HD DVD FORMAT: The disc is a dual form factor that consists of HD DVD and Standard DVD, and depending on the type of player that you’re using, it will automatically launch the correct format. The disc also comes with Microsoft’s HDi technology, which I will have to say that I will surely miss, as it is in fact gives the viewers a better interactive experience with the contents on the disc than the one used in Blu ray. The sound placement on this volume is pretty decent, but the back speakers on 5.1 channels are not as prominent as previous episodes. Then again, the cinematic scenes didn’t really provide any use of 5.1 scenes except on some occasions.
EXTRAS: After multiple attempts with the previous volumes, the downloadable contents are finally available through Microsoft Xbox 360. The download for this particular volume are 12-production sketch images of the escape pod hanger, and 10-production sketch images of the escape pod. Another one of the downloadable features is FREEDOM 3’s digest, and a quick summary of the previous episode. Extras are only accessible when you watch the OVA on HD. It comes with Volume 5 trailer and the 3D CG Simulation Video with picture-in-picture feature in 5.1 channels.
IN SUMMARY: Laughs and fan is what’s on tap with this all-original and very exciting OVA.
