SYNOPSIS:
The destruction of the Village Hidden in the Leaves has been averted, but at great cost. While the village mourns, a new menace arrives in the form of Itachi Uchiha, Sasuke’s mysterious older brother and sworn foe, but it’s not Sasuke he’s interest in! Meanwhile Jiraiya lures Naruto away on a training journey by promising to teach him the Fourth Hokage’s own original jutsu. While Naruto practices, Jiraiya searches for the Fifth Hokage candidate Tsunade, one of the legendary Sannin. But another of the Sannin is looking for Tsunade as well, for a much more sinister purpose – Orochimaru!

Contains episodes 79-92 on 3 DVDs. Look at the EXTRAS section for details about the limited edition.

REVIEW:
A village in mourning, a new training begins and a new threat appears while an old one offers up a new danger to the Leaf Village in the latest box set uncut. The village begins to rebuild but a new Hokage must be found and the one chosen is a hard drinking, harder gambling woman named Tsunade who also happens to be a legendary healer and the descendant of the very first Hokage. But first a new threat appears and Itachi is as cold and as ruthless as any villain yet. Sasuke goes up against the man responsible for the destruction of his clan but at great cost to himself. His failure only shows Itachi’s incredible and deadly skills as a ninja. After all, Sasuke is no slacker when it comes to the deadly arts. But he is no match for his brother. An amazing battle is seen between Itachi and his group of evil doers and the adult shinobi of the village, including a one on one duel with Kakashi! It’s sharingan versus sharingan in a fight few will be able to forget. Meanwhile Naruto has trouble in mastering the latest jutsu his trainer has set out for him. Jiraiya is quite the character and although these moments allow for some lighter fare from all the heavy drama and action, it also serves to show Naruto’s continuing development in his skills and understanding as an up and coming shinobi.  The new threat however directly deals with him as Itachi hints at his true goal which has nothing to do with Sasuke or the Leaf Village. He wants Naruto and his purpose couldn’t be more sinister.

Speaking of sinister, Orochimaru’s story has not finished. The last disc in this set focuses almost exclusively on Tsunade. It is a race between Jiraiya with Naruto and Orochimaru with his aid as to who will reach her first. Jiraiya wants to offer her the place as the Fifth Hokage. But Orochimaru has a very different offer, a nefarious one that Tsunade may not be able to refuse. In these episodes her origins are revealed, her early years in the Leaf Village, her rise as a sannin, and the great loss she suffered which forever shaped her and may push her to accept Orochimaru’s unholy offer.

The show constantly amazes me with its ability to evolve the plot and the characters. We’re heading into episode 90 and beyond and yet the anime never stumbled in the story or the great animation. It keeps finding new characters linked to the tale, widening its scope and its intrigue. It remains, if anything, even more compelling than when it first began.

This box set also introduces a new ending theme song, “Shooting Star” sung by Tia. It features memorable images of the female characters in various summer poses and swimwear, even surfboards.

EXTRAS:
Bonus features include trailers of other Viz titles, a production art gallery, From Sketch to Screen:  Storyboard Comparison of Episode 88, and a sneak peek at the eighth season box set as well as Buso Renkin. This set also has a collectible Naruto Storyboards Sketchbook for episode 82. The book contains the complete storyboards for the episode for a total of just over 100 pages of black and white raw artwork with the original Japanese notes. This book is exclusive to this box set. The packaging itself is a striking gun metal grey background with dark blue highlights. The inside is a fold-out featuring full color art work of the characters.

The limited edition of the sixth box set comes with a detailed figure of Gamakichi. The 3rd of 6 collectible figurines exclusive to the limited edition box sets of Naruto.

IN SUMMARY:
The threat of Orochimaru has not yet passed and Naruto is about to meet a greater threat in the arrival of Sasuke’s brother in the latest series of episodes. Naruto is one of the most compelling ongoing action series in anime. Outstanding!
