Naruto Uzumaki is preparing for the final rounds of the Chunin exams, but he needs another coach to train him like before, and he asks the Toad Mountain Sage, Jaraiya but he has other things in mind. Naruto proves his worth and captures the Sage's interest, but not without naming his price. He wants a sexy girl first before he will do anything! Naruto on the other hand wants to learn to successfully walk on water. While Naruto shows Jaraiya his chakra, he notices a strange double seal on his stomach, and releases something hidden in Naruto he never felt before.

As the others prepare also, someone sinister has a need to be pitted against Sasuke in battle as he is growing strong. A plan to destroy the Hidden Leaf Village is under way, and the Exam Proctor, Hayate goes to find out who the conspirators are.

For Naruto a whole new world of jutsu could be opened up for him to use if he trains perfectly with the Sage Jaraiya, but will he be able to open his second and more powerful chakra?

Sakura and Ino visit Sasuke in hospital as he was badly injured in battle, but when they get there, he has mysteriously vanished.

Volume 3.1 concentrates on three angles. One Naruto's training with the Sage, The Hidden Leaf Village's threat and Sasuke's disappearance. All are important parts of the story, all filled with intrigue and plotlines that the viewer will finally know the truth later on.

The story is exciting all the way through, and the action does not let up for a second. Humour is the main thrill in this anime, as are answers to questions on the minds of fans about the characters.

Watching Sakura and Ino vie for Sasuke's affection is funny enough, but seeing Naruto trying to use his summoning jutsu is even more hilarious in comparison.
