REVIEW:
Inspired by Antoine de Saint-Exupery’s internationally renowned book The Little Prince (Le Petit Prince), Michel is a Korean animation that takes the character and spins a whole new world of fantasy and adventure.

It begins with a theft. The Black Hammers’ Gang is a group of thieves led by the greedy Salome, a woman who wants and takes anything she likes. They use mechanical beasts and flying vessels and are unbeatable. Except for one person. Kim, a daring young pilot out to save her father’s legacy thwarts the den of thieves time and again. But this time something different happens. Some bad wheather, damaged vessels and both aircrafts go down and land upon the strange and magical Sitel Island. This island of fairy is guarded by Michel, a sweet young boy with a pure heart. There he takes care of the fairies and the Tree of Life. However, as soon as the Black Hammers hear about it, they try to take the tree and cause a terrible thing. The Tree of Life is now withering. To restore it, all the fairies of the island are needed, but seizing an opportunity to create monsters using the fairies, the Black Hammers have stolen all the fairies too! Now it’s up to Michel along with Kim and the one remaining fairy Poyo to track down and rescue all the fairies before Sitel fades to nothing!

A fantasy adventure that will thrill children and delight audiences, this TV series follows the small group of heroes as they journey from one exotic land to the next, face various monsters that must be returned to their proper fairy state, thwart the Black Hammers repeatedly, and revive the Tree of Life. Will they succeed? The TV series will answer that question, allowing the characters and story to go full out to bring surprising and emotional closure at the end.

During their travels they will go into deep forests, find strange castles, mysterious deserts, and awe-inspiring treasures. They meet new friends everywhere they go and each story imparts the message that the greatest treasures of all are the strength of one’s will to do what is right, and the power of the heart. The warmth of the show is especially felt at the end when a climatic battle is waged to win back the last much needed fairy, Poyo must come into his true form, and Michel risks everything to help his friends. That the greatest treasure is the strength of one’s convictions, the power of the heart, is a wonderful message to impart to any child.

The animation is splendidly colorful. The fairies are wondrous creatures in a variety of shapes and colors that range from the cute yellow Poyo to the heroic Sir Brown knight. There are butterfly fairies, seasonal ones of great power, and many more to both delight young children and inspire their imaginations. The music is equally well done with a particularly cute closing that has the Hammer Gang singing their theme in chibi form.
