Escape from the prison will come at a cost for Cleo as they engage Vetti’s forces right out of the gate! Michel races to be by his side but it won’t be in time to save someone crucial to their crew. With loss comes a hint of a secret to Vetti’s ears. Just what is his tie to Cleo? And if his days are numbered due to the Soleil inside him, then what of Cleo’s fate? With the rise in peril to the entire galaxy from the Black Cross religion, Michel and Cleo may have to form an alliance with the person they hate the most – Vetti!

The penultimate volume of this arresting anime sees a lot happening, but not fast enough. Cleo escapes – at a price. He is reunited with Michel. But there are so many things left unsaid between these two that one wonders if we’ll ever find out if Michel had been violated by Vetti or not and if Cleo will ever find out about it. With that in mind, it makes the thought of having to ally with Vetti that much more unpalatable.  Yet when the Countess’ land is slated for attack and her for execution, Michel learns something that moves her to make the effort, to put herself, her own personal desires aside for the sake of the greater good. She’s an incredibly selfless person. She and Cleo grow a little closer, but with Vetti’s limited time, it’s with a mixed sense of anticipation that we await to find out what will happen next.

The growing threat of the Black Cross religion, the ancient prophecy, and the pope’s heinous use of his daughter causes a pivotal turn for the girl’s character. With everything building to Cleo and Michel about to approach Vetti and the danger represented by the pope, it makes a good penultimate place to leave the anime on until the final volume. However the show doesn’t do that. Instead the last episode on this volume focuses solely on Eimer. It reveals her past and how she first met Cleo and came to be a part of his crew. It’s an odd time for the sentimental change of pace and a cause for concern. Usually back stories for supporting characters are given in an anime at this late date for one reason – to attach the heart strings before they get pulled and pulled hard. But we’ll have to wait and see what happens in the final volume to discover Eimer’s, and everyone else’s, fate.

EXTRAS:
Bonus features include trailers, clean opening and ending animation, and the original bonus feature of the Japanese 2006 cosplay competition hosted by the Japanese voice actress for Michel and she’s in full costume too!

IN SUMMARY:
The penultimate volume of Glass Fleet has royal ties hinted at, ominous forebodings of what’s to come, and a new threat rises that may cause enemies to have to band together!
