SERIES SYNOPSIS:
Centuries ago, at the end of the last Battle of the Gods, Athena captured the forces of evil and sealed them away. But her seal is weakening, and now the 108 dark minions of Hades are poised to destroy Athena’s Knights and conquer the world!
REVIEW:
Knights of the Zodiac is classic shonen pure and true. Many fans might know it from the popular anime it inspired commonly referred to as Saint Seiya. The story revolves around the Bronze Knight Seiya and his fellow beautiful male comrades who don transforming armor to battle gods and mythically powered minions to save a beautiful woman (the reincarnated goddess Athena) and the world.
In this latest volume, the Hades saga begins as the Bronze Knights must battle the god of the underworld himself, Hades, to stop him from his evil plan to kill Athena and take over the world. The Knights will have to face their greatest challenge yet as they go up not against just any minions, but the specters of Hades who turn out to be fallen Knights of battles past! While facing this crisis, more than one of the Knights must face a familiar face in battle and Seiya still searches for his beloved sister.
The manga sports some classic late 1980’s style art work that has the thick bold lines that compliment a robust shonen series such as this. The story itself has an interesting blend of myth and astrology. For instance, the armor the Knights wear transform into special armor of the various zodiac signs (hence the title). The gods are those of Greek mythology (Athena, Hades, Aphrodite, Poseidon, etc.) and the names of many of the characters are taken from astrological names and the ancient Greek alphabet.
A special bonus included in this volume is character and cloth diagrams.
IN SUMMARY:
Knights of the Zodiac is a robust shonen series of beautiful male knights fighting gods and specters to save their goddess and the world. This particular volume sees the beginning of the Hades arc unfold and the Knights must face their greatest challenge yet as they face old friends now turned enemy. |
