"CJ" Mark helps with seizure of pirated mertials in Hong Kong, and leads to the arrest of three men.
CODA (Content Overseas Distribution Association) which handles piracy issues overseas announced that it investigated three stores in Hong Kong with the help of the Hong Kong Custom that lead to a confiscation of 10,615 pirated materials with an estimated amount of ¥2.5 million of damages and the arrest of three men.
The CDs and DVDs were illegally marked with the “CJ” symbol and leads to the first successful seizure of items with the symbol. The “CJ” symbol stands for “Content Japan”, which proves authenticity, but also exposes copyright infringement of trademark rights if pirated materials have a forged emblem on the item. Items without the symbol or with a forge symbol are in clear violation of copyright infringement, and make it easier to prove in a lawsuit against piracy outside of Japan. This is the first time that the infringement of trademark was used, and the first in the world to apply the infringement trademark for piracy. The investigation happened between five and 6 PM on February 20, 2008. The confiscated items includes Sgt. Frog, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Mobile Suit Gundam Seed C. C. 73 – Stargazer -, Inuyasha 3: Swords of an Honorable Ruler, and Inuyasha 4: Fire on the Mystic Island; rights belonging to Kadokawa Pictures, Kadokawa Shoten, Sunrise, TV Tokyo, and Yomiuri Television.
