A night in the rain leads to Morio and Saeki spending the evening together. But what should be a dream come true for Morio proves to be only the first step in an arduous romance with an emotionally unattainable man. He is all too aware of Saeki’s desire to avoid emotional attachment, but Morio, in the throws of his very first love, cannot hope but yearn and ache for more. As they grow closer, Morio discovers the lonely life his eccentric teacher lives. Can Morio find a way to win the distant heart that so constantly eludes his grasp?
Never a more painfully awkward relationship has there been seen in yaoi than Morio’s attempts to close the distance between him and his lover. Painful to watch at times, yet involving, it doesn’t run quite the usual gamut for standard dramatic romance fare in this genre. It’s a bit more bitter than sweet at times. The reader is not given the impression necessarily that there will be a happily ever after, after all, their road can’t be easy with their very different opposing personalities. They chafe each other, igniting each other’s worse traits often. The perfect example being how Saeki’s coldness ignites Morio’s deep and sundry insecurities. The story manages nevertheless to sow the seeds of hope that they might work it all out in the end. The special bonus afterwards is a longer than average extra. The story involves Saeki’s butler/chef/servant Yajima and Kazuki Nakajima, once lover of Saeki and classmate to Mario. Nakajima lives a life of casual sex from one lover to another, never troubled by the lack of love in his connections – until he runs into Yajima. All sorts of awkward moments, misunderstandings, and a growing obsession with the male servant begin to irritate the restless Nakajima because the usually emotionally disengaged young man doesn’t realize he’s falling in love. This story explores the relationship evolving between these two unlikely lovers and what happens next. IN SUMMARY: Vanilla comes to a satisfying conclusion with an added tale of romance between secondary characters.
