SYNOPSIS:
Seina Yamada is an ordinary high school student who was born with extraordinary bad luck. Because of such ill omen, his life has never gone quite the way he intended. Well, that’s all about to get worse! One morning, Seina gets recruited by the Galaxy Police due to a case of mistaken identity. Soon he’s fending off pirates and female admirers both, and maybe learning a bit about himself along the way. He may be flying through the stars, but this boy’s still tripping over his own two feet!

The full 26 episode TV series on 8 discs.

REVIEW:
The unluckiest boy in the galaxy is about to get all the luck he wanted, and then some he didn’t!  Seina is the stereotypical ordinary geek, with a twist. Seems he’s also the unluckiest. No matter what he does, things break down, he trips over flat ground, the sky falls, you name it and it will happen to him no matter how preposterous it is. Then one sunny day, the sexy Amane shows up. She’s from the GXP, that wacky and often inept Galaxy Police Force seen in the original Tenchi Muyo series (the police force, not Amane). Before you can say “Gotcha!” she’s roped the boy into enrolling into the academy to join the force! She’s used wiles and feminine trickery to get the better of Mr. Unlucky. Seems for such an unlucky boy he sure is surrounded by a lot of luscious ladies. Not only is there the aggressive Amane, there’s also his long held crush on Kiriko who’s commanding yet a beauty. After he gets to the academy the laughs keep rolling out while he tries to shape up. And more babes keeping coming up to make the life of the ladies already with their eye on him green with envy and then girl fights begin. But in outer space, this isn’t any ordinary cat fight. Laser guns, holo-projectors and light sabers get used!

The GXP series is a much more pure, racy and fun hearted anime compared to the other Tenchi series. It has an all new cast of characters, including a pretty space pirate named Ryoko (but she’ not THE Ryoko from Tenchi’s life). Tenchi fans don’t pout though, there are cameos from the original series. And many of these new characters from GXP show up in the third Tenchi Muyo OVA series: Tenchi Muyo! Ryo Ohki. GXP follows squarely on Seina and all the trouble his luckless life luckily gets him into. He ends up being used as space pirate bait, gets a rival he never wanted for the bevy of ladies chasing him, and ends up in a big duel proving he is a man after all by the end of the show. This is a much more pure harem comedy and it’s awesome fun and big laughs all around.

I love this genre. Harem comedies are fun, light, and entertaining and GXP has its sci-fi twists to add to the party. It also holds a less conventional ending by wrapping things up in a surprising way, allowing things to be less open-ended than this kind of anime usually would. If you want a show that’s pure entertainment – GXP is it!

The music is hilarious. It’s the end song that gets me every time. Done in a round, it’s all about a certain unlucky boy and the racy shots of Amane and the Kiriko sure don’t hurt the eyes either during the ending sequence. The animation of the TV show is solid. It's alive with vivid color and lots of movement. The character designs are a combination of sexy ladies, pretty girls, and crazy guys. Especially the villains! There’re all sorts of insane action against space pirates and big space battles. It has a great lively energy that gets increasingly addictive with each episode.

EXTRAS:
Extra goodies include clean opening and ending animation, trailers of other FUNimation titles, character profiles, image galleries, and outtakes with the English voice cast.

IN SUMMARY:
Tenchi Muyo GXP is a great chunk off the old Tenchi block. It takes some of the best features from the original series like space action and beautiful space alien females, and adds heaps of comedy with the unlucky boy lucky enough to be in the middle of it all!
