In this revised novel of the original series that inspired an OVA anime, readers will become immersed in a ruthless future world filled with violence, beautiful men, and raging desires.
Ceres city is a place where anything can be bought or taken - including people. In the slums, infamous gang leader Riki has three years of his life unaccounted for. He has returned but he is not the same man who left. He recalls what happened during his time away and the blond haired, blue eyed devil that pierced his soul and his body. When he returns to the slums forever changed, he finds himself in the middle of a turf war between his old gang Bison and the new, younger more aggressive Jeeks. For a yaoi series this is strict and pure science fiction and immersing storytelling. The opening scene is one of erotic sexual torture by a harsh and cruelly beautiful master. But aide from that one scene, this novel focuses more on the conflicts, both personality and physical, that occurs when Riki returns and gang war breaks out in the streets. The world Riki lives in is an immersing and uncompromising one. Might makes right and if you have the money, you can buy anything or anyone. Life is a cruel fate between the haves and have-nots. What exactly happened to Riki during those three crucial years remains mostly unknown aside from some scant hints during this first volume. Being the first part of the series, the remaining volumes will undoubtedly shed light on his history, one that seems to involve the cold, cruel and beautiful Iason Mink. Their history is kept shrouded in anticipatory secrecy. Aside from the prologue, assuming that was Rikki in it, little is yet revealed about the tie between these two charismatic and enigmatic men. This is hard core science fiction erotica. There is immensely detailed world creation of this place and the two kinds of ‘citizens’. The whole lifestyle is gritty, and offers an unflinching look at the merciless street living in this future world. The first volume definitely makes a reader hunger to know more about Riki and Iason and what will happen next. The few yet stand out illustrations within the novel are some of the best seen in a yaoi book. They appear to have been originally in full color but are reprinted here in black and white. The images, though few, are effective and striking. IN SUMMARY: Ai no Kusabi is the first volume in a riveting hard core sci-fi erotica series. This is one that yaoi fans who enjoy strong immersing story telling will not want to miss out on.
