In the distance, Ogun's hawk flies overhead, carrying a scroll. Gennosuke and Kagura are intent on pursuing it, but Kagura is told not to pursue it too far, though Kagura knows who is controlling the hawk, and it is not its former owner. Gennosuke follows behind her to make sure she is all right, while Hyoma and Saemon wait in the field for them to return, but they are not alone. Tensen is hidden in the grass, waiting to strike, but he is swiftly discovered.

Gennosuke and Kagura continue their pursuit of Ogun's hawk, and in the darkness, the hawk loses its grip of the scroll. Gennosuke picks it up and rolls it together, remembering all the while that someone might be watching them. At first he thinks it could be Oboro as she has a magical eye she was born with, but he realises that she could not be observing them as she has no other knowledge of the ninja arts so it could not be her.
Gennosuke feels they have been lured away for a reason.

Tenzen who intends to use Oboro, and mocks Hyoma's blindness, lunges for him with his sword, but he comes off the worst in the bloody fight. After the fight is over, Gennosuke and Kagura shows the others the scroll. On it are the names of Jinjo and Hotarubi written in blood. Gennosuke wants the hawk destroyed next time it is seen, even if it does happen to be controlled by Oboro.

While Oboro and Akigenu are bathing, Oboro reflects upon Tenzen's assault on her in the ship. Akigenu reassures her that Koshiro is still alive. Koshiro wants to find his way back to be with Oboro as he thinks he is in love with her. Tenzen's real motive on the ship was to draw out the Kouga who were hiding there. As more trouble is yet to come, Koshiro wishes to meet with Gennosuke in order to kill him, but Kagura takes him away while Hyoma is left to fight with him whatever the outcome.

The animation of Hyome showing Gennosuke how to train to see a ninja is perfect and highly detailed. The rendering of the water is some of the best animation seen yet. The story centres on Hyoma's training of Gennosuke and it is an interesting look at the life he led as a Kouga make before he was intended for Oboro. He was supposed to learn the ways of the ninja, the stealth, fighting skills but all the new arts he learned, he was not supposed to use his eyes, yet wanted to use them in combat - and even in those times he put them to good use.

This new volume of Basilisk is vastly different to the other volumes as the story has changed with the characters tiring of the warring with each other, and the two would be lovers of Gennosuke and Oboro now separated, yet still thinking of their lives when they were together when it was not so wrong. It captures the feeling of an ancient age where Samurai clans ruled over lands and magic also did.

EXTRAS:
Behind the scenes of Basilisk, Text-less opening animation and trailers for other anime titles come along with this DVD.

IN SUMMARY:
This carries on nicely from the last volume - excellent use of animation with a powerful script creates a moving and action - packed story.
