Hare+Guu is unique. Everything it brings to the table is different enough to keep your very close attention because you won’t have seen something quite like it before. The animation has this quirky, almost cell-shaded quality to it. It goes from being pleasantly minimal/super deformed to being very detailed and manic – all depending on the situation. We know all this from watching the first series, and let me tell you that Hare+Guu Deluxe is simply no exception to all these highly entertaining rules of thumb. If the first series wasn’t mentally damaging enough for you, there’s more crazy stuff brimming over the edge in this continuing saga of Hare’s daily misfortunes. Don’t pretend like you don’t enjoy watching him suffer!

Dr. Clive and Weda’s marriage brings baby Ame into the household, but that’s not the only wedding in the works. A most unexpected character finds that love and war aren’t always exclusive! Meanwhile, the village elder’s chest hair afro returns, stronger and bigger than ever before, and another old foe returns to the jungle seeking a unique brand of revenge. With Hare stuck raising the new baby and his own parents, thanks to Guu’s mischievous magic, there’s no real telling what kind of comical insanity is right around the corner for all our jungle friends. The absurd comedy and abundant chest hair (no, seriously) explode at an unstoppable rate in the concluding chapter of Hare+Guu Deluxe.

As for everything else, the plots are imaginative, and the music is fun and catchy. The opening sequence is especially hard to skip each time as the OP is so funny. It’s exponentially better than the first OP – they really let loose with this one. Hare+Guu is certainly meant to be funny, and often that humour comes across in the strangest of ways! The chest afros are pretty much out of control in this final volume – one actually consumes an entire household and needs to be removed by a clean up crew for a week. And how about Hare’s parents suddenly turning into infant children requiring much care and rearing? It’s almost too much for hare to handle, but luckily he always has Guu’s help (unless of course that’s actually a curse?). If you’re looking for weird fun, it’s here. Hare+Guu continues to impress and confuse – don’t miss out on the finale of this zany anime oddity!

EXTRAS:
The disc extras include English recording outtakes, clean opening and closing animation, and “Lazy Sensei’s Linguistic Lessons” so you can pick up on some of the cultural notes and word translation. The DVD also includes a snappy little booklet with lots more notes and tidbits (almost too many tidbits actually - it’s got to be the craziest book of extras you will ever see!).

IN SUMMARY:
Weird. Unique. Totally hilarious. Any of these descriptions together or apart do well to describe to a potential viewer what they can expect from Hare+Guu Deluxe, the madcap second instalment of this always evolving series of oddities.
