From Up Above is a magnificent new fantasy series featuring romantic creativity the likes of shojo epics such as Fushigi Yuugi while incorporating yaoi sensibilities into a tale of romance, reincarnation and beautiful gods meddling in mortal lives. Yuuto is your average guy. He’s a bit feisty but pretty normal. One stormy day he finds out he’s the reincarnation of a priestess from a thousand years ago. The Thunder God she sealed away has come back and this handsome deity wants Yuuto to break his seal by remembering his true name. Kazuchi is a thunder god who turns into an interesting two-tailed fox when he chooses. He is bound to Yuuto and cannot leave Yuuto’s life until he is freed. All sorts of supernatural mayhem enter when not only does Yuuto have to deal with a thunder god that needs energy “mana’ in a very intimate way of getting it, but a rival god shows up and he doesn’t want to make nice. It’s about to be a dark and stormy night!
This manga is a wonderfully aspiring fantasy tale that delights at every turn. How Yuuto and Kazuchi are brought together, the manifestation of the thunder god, the discovery of Yuuto’s past life, all lead to an immersing world set in present day Tokyo, with all the great hallmarks of pure fantasy innovativeness. Yuuto tries to maintain his everyday life but it seems that perhaps his life was never as ordinary as he thought, nor perhaps that his friends were as unknowing as they seem. Kauzchi isn’t the only god roaming the modern day city and trouble is stirring in the air. Volume 1 ends with a pending confrontation battle between Kazuchi and the sneaky beautiful male snake god who has his coils wrapped around someone dear to Yuuto. There is a lot of imagination involved in the story. The powers that the gods have, the need for ‘mana’ which must be replenished in a fashion that will thrill yaoi fans is done with both seductive allure and comedic exuberance. It’s a well flowing story with an equally flowing art style too. It’s a delightfully attractive illustrative form with appealing young men and beautiful and handsome deities that steal hearts and imagination with their charisma. IN SUMMARY:
From Up Above is above and beyond expectations. It’s a stunning new fantasy yaoi series that has seductive gods, overflowing imagination and a grand romantic adventure.
