This is an anime guaranteed to wig you out! Bobobo-bobo-bobobo is a dude with a ‘fro with the most! He’s the cat that is alone against the tyranny of the hairless despot Baldy Bald and the Chrome Dome Empire. Their goal: to shave everyone everywhere no matter how cute their tresses may be. Such is the plight of the perils of Beauty. She’s go those cute pink locks and they’re about to get a fate that’s hair raising. Then in walks the hero of the hour, the man who has the hair with the power, Bo-cat, Bo-meister, the Bo-man! Now he’s got himself a cute sidekick and a goal, to save hair everywhere! Be prepared – this is an anime with insanity a cut above the rest. It is sheer in-zaniness. The dude has as his main weapons nose hairs that extend, are prehensile, and even has military booggers to help out in a pinch. The story style is all over the map. Each story is pretty much a stand alone but don’t expect much of anything to make a lot of sense. Is it fast paced? Heck yeah. Is it crazy? You bet your ‘doo! Is it fun? That’s the question. It’s unique. There’s not doubt about it. It’s unpredictable and hyper. Fans of stuff like Azumanga Daioh or Excel Saga might want to check this title out. It’s not just the anime itself that’s odd though. There’s some funky funk with the set up too. The release has only one subtitle stream. There are other companies out there that do the same with their anime titles so it’s rare but not unheard of. What’s strange is that the Japanese subtitling for character names et al are still intact when viewing the show yet no English translated subtitles are given for us to make heads or tales of it. The subtitle stream that does exist is more in the line of what you would see in closed captioning for the hearing impaired. Now that last part is cool as I don’t think I ever came across and anime that included that kind of subtitling. But I wish it also had the subtitles that are more faithful to the original Japanese just so that I could get a laugh checking it out. The show has a lot of parodies and cultural/entertainment in-jokes and it’s a shame to miss out on all that good stuff. On the plus side this release is the uncut version meaning it has scenes never seen in the US TV aired version. Never before seen footage is something I can’t shake a toupee at. EXTRAS: One extra made it in by a hair: previews of other titles. IN SUMMARY: This is an anime that redefines funk! It’s a show where the hair has soul (literally!). A dude with the ‘fro with the most is the hero of the hour cuz he’s got the hair with the power to save your ‘doo and maybe someday the world! |
