Having to deal with Marller’s continued inept yet troublesome demonic assaults are one thing, mini-ninja wars another, but the appearance of Urd’s mother takes the cake in the penultimate volume of Ah My Goddess.

Although the first season of this delightful anime took stories from the very first volumes of the hit manga, the latest episodes re-interpret and bring to animated life some of the favorite chapters from later manga volumes, it touches on the volumes in the twenties in the manga series. The latest in the anime begins with a crisis of Heavenly and Hellish proportions. Urd’s dual nature of being part demon and part goddess is taking its toll. The only choice she has is to allow her demonic side to perish, but with it will go all her memories and aspects of herself that she holds equally dear as her goddess side. The only solution is to go for help to the last person she wants to see – her mother. Hild is the ruler of the demon realm and with her appearance a whole new dimension is given to Urd’s story. It’s a battle between mother and daughter and the choice of Urd’s destiny in this episode. It was a personal favorite in the manga, the only wish is that it had gone deeper. These two characters and their relationship deserved more than one episode.

Hild isn’t exactly completely gone though, following in the wake of her first appearance in the anime, she returns when Marller is paying her dues for her many past screw-ups and is now more determined than ever to payback those goddesses for her humiliation. Hild appears like a little devil, urging and using Marller for her own more devious plans. Hild seems quite taken with Keiichi and finds challenging Belldandy irresistible. It leads to a lot of trouble for everyone, even Marller.

The last two episodes on this volume are a mix of cute comedy and sweet moments. First Marller gets some mini-ninjas to attack the temple but with madcap results. Then with her powers suspended, Belldandy and Keiichi end up on a plane of infinite space with Bell unable to use her powers. It contributes to some utterly saccharine moments between the couple that are endearing more than anything.

EXTRAS:
Bonus features include clean opening and closing animation, production art gallery, ADV previews, and episode commentary with English voice actors Alyssa Brodsky (Marller) and Kevin Collins (Senbei).

IN SUMMARY:
The penultimate volume of Ah My Goddess has moments both sweet and funny for fans. It features the appearance of Hild and some more demonic drama for Urd.
