"Sought by the greed of men since the dawn of humankind, but only bestowed upon the women whos fate it forever scars - the Witchblade! Is it the righteous sword of god, or the hand of the devil himself? Now a new bearer has been chosen, and she must discover the answer for herself."
Masane Amaha and Rihoto her daughter get on a boat destined for Tokyo away from the Agents of the Child Welfare Ministry who are concerned about her daughter's wellbeing as she is constantly on the run with her single mother. Reaching Tokyo, Masane and her daughter are captured by the authorities who take the child from her and into protective custody. Masane is told she cannot keep running with the child if she does not have a home to go to. Sakurai, one of the Child Welfare Agents responsible for taking her in, mentions that she has changed from six years ago when she was found at the epicentre of a massive earthquake in Tokyo. Alone with a baby in her arms and no recollection of who she was or even her name. Trying to get to her child to retrieve her from the clutches of the Agency, she steals a Police car and is involved in an accident without hurting herself, instead she is banged-up in jail. Night guards wonder around, but one soon destroyed by a mecha bursts into the building after Masane, but why would he want her? This soon to be hit anime has been adapted from the bestseller series Witchblade comic book that also inspired the hit TV series starring Yancy Butler in the lead role as the unsuspecting woman chosen to wield the Witchblade. As only women are allowed to bear this weapon, men have sought to take the bearer of its awesome power and use it for their own ends, as he who controls the power can also rule the world. There is a history to this weapon and through the ages each female has had it until they have died, and another has taken the place as bearer once they have found it. In this first volume, there is a problem for the current bearer of the Witchblade as she finds out she is not alone. The animation is groundbreaking and filled with much skill, adapting all that founder Marc Silvestri has created, bringing it into more modern times, and setting it against a backdrop in anime of neo Tokyo. This will certainly be a success as it will bring together those who have appreciated the original comic book series by Top Cow, and those who enjoy anime, integrating them as a whole onto this new concept. There is in this an involving storyline that shows its emotional edge through all the action, as Masane constantly tries to make a life for her daughter away from the clutches of the Child Welfare Agency. Many viewers will also find a great deal of fan service is attached to this series as the episodes progress. EXTRAS: This exiting first volume comes with a tour of Top Cow studios, an interesting and fresh look at the Japanese voice artist Masane Akama, Promotional video, text-less opening and closing animations and trailers for other anime. IN SUMMARY: Seductive and erotic. Terrific story and action moments are spectacularly executed in this first volume, which is sure to be a hit!
