With the FBI presence in Japan, Kira/Light embarks on a series of ‘tests’ to learn the extent of the power of the Death Note. He learns things even Ryuk, the Death God, didn’t know. His brilliance is certain. But so too is his psychosis as he uses this knowledge to wipe out lives in an ever alarming body count. He makes his move against the FBI and propels things forward to unexpected levels with L’s investigating and what happens with the police of which Light’s father is chief of. In this volume, recent events show not only that he’s willing to kill the innocent and not just the guilty, but these episodes also reveal how much he’s reveling in it.

Light’s own murderous actions might lead to his discovery by the police…unless he gets to their witness first. The sheer duplicitous calculation that he displays is disturbing. But L is close on Light’s heels. That these two individuals are so closely matched in cunning and intelligence makes for an incredibly rousing, suspenseful and taut thriller. L’s latest move is to put the Yagami household under tight surveillance. With Light Yagami feverishly working on his insane plan, just who will discover what in the latest volume of Death Note? And just what will that knowledge cost them?

Death Note is the most fascinating game of cat and mouse. With the latest murderous events, things progress quickly. L takes risky steps to raise the level of the investigation and a special team of trusted individuals is formed. As we watch Light further embrace his Kira persona and commit an act over the line of his original ambitions, we also see L more closely. L’s character, the way he looks, he appears otherworldly with his strange eyes and odd way of holding himself, to the point where you have to wonder if he is strictly human. It adds a nice atmospheric touch to the character itself, as though something dark and supernatural has already touched him. The gripping story is mesmerizing. The latest events are shocking. You can’t afford to miss a single moment in this arresting anime.

EXTRAS:
The DVD case has great Gothic cover art with red foil stencilling for the title and a black translucent DVD case. It features reverse cover art and inside is a mini-fold with striking imagery. DVD bonus features include trailers and ads for Viz manga and video titles, production art gallery, video interview with Japanese series director Tetsuro Araki and character designer Masaru Kitao, and part 2 of the Behind the Scenes featurette with the English ADR Director Karl Willems and voice actor Alessandro Juliani (L) who discuss their take on the anime and L’s character and shows behind the scenes of the recording sessions. There is also audio commentary on episode 7 with Jiro Okada (Script Editor) and voice actress Tabitha St. Germain (Naomi Misora).

This first volume comes in a regular disc edition and a limited deluxe edition with an exclusive Light figure. The figure is of Light standing with one arm outstretched and the other holding the Death Note. Nicely detailed, it will be a must-have for Death Note fans.

IN SUMMARY:
Death Note is the most gripping thriller in all of anime. For anime fans who want a dark show that is innovative, brilliant, and fascinating, this is the series.
