Ryusuke gets kidnapped, a surprise blues jam with a living legend, and a concert that could make or break the band are just the start of what happens in the penultimate volume of Beck Mongolian Chop Squad.

It begins with Ryusuke having to face some hard knocks for past impulsivity. It leaves him more determined than ever to get Beck on the charts and a hit in America. But the road isn’t easy. They have to make some dangerous alliances and Leon Sykes is waiting in the wings, ready to pounce.  The key is to get the band to play the much touted Greatful Sound music festival, but the cost could prove higher than any of them could guess. They get the chance of a lifetime, but old enemies and new ones are making their moves as well as they see this pivotal opportunity for Beck as their opportunity to take them down once and for all.

The band is facing a critical time and the pressure is on for them to come out with a new song. All that pressure falls on Koyuki’s shoulders. It hurts his creativity and some of the band members turn against him as tempers run high. But this is all part of the business and they’re going to have to learn to shape up and cope or give up their dreams for good. While he struggles with that, Maho’s star in modeling continues to rise. After spending the night together, Koyuki is more confused than ever about what he is to Maho and what they are to each other. Are they in a relationship or not? And with the sweet and enthusiastic Hiromi waiting in the wings, could Koyuki be tempted to be led astray? But it’s hard not to be drawn to the enigmatic composure that Maho has. When push comes to shove at the Greatful Sound concert, it’s not just the band’s fate that’s on the line, but Koyuki’s future with Maho as well. Yoshito pushes his buttons yet again and the naive Koyuki falls for it once more. They agree on a deal, and the outcome will determine if Koyuki can ever see Maho again.

The most crucial event that happens is the confrontation that occurs between Ryusuke and Leon. Old grudges won’t die and Leon puts the screws to the free spirited Ryusuke. It forces the brilliant guitarist to make a bet and it puts the entire future of the band on the line!

Things build up beautifully for a tense penultimate volume in preparation for the climax to this anime series. The band and the future of these individual’s are on the line including Koyuki’s heart depending on what happens with Maho.

On an aside, I was swept away by the English dubbed version of the ending theme “Moon on Water”. FUNimation continues to display some wonderful voice talent with their English cast.

EXTRAS:
Bonus features include FUNimation trailers of other shows, textless songs, an all new Beck Mongolian Chop Squad music video, and an exclusive guitar pick.

IN SUMMARY:
Things hit a sour note in the penultimate volume of Beck as the band, their future, and Koyuki’s romance are all put on the line. It’s make or break it time.
