Haruo is the dorky nice guy that doesn’t have a clue that his three overprotective sisters are witches. They do everything to give him a normal life and not awaken his dormant powers - even if that means whacking him over the head with a memory hammer.  But lo, enter in Ayumi, she’s sexy, fun and utterly evil. She wants to seduce him, get those powers and make some memories of the naughty kind. She even managed to get an edict from the Wizard Society for her to move into their house and be their maid! Now these sisters have to pull out all the stops, because Ayumi will use every dirty trick at her disposal to get her man! Magic collides with love for great laughs and fun times in Magikano!

Inspired by the manga from Tateaki Momose, Magikano the anime is a harem comedy done in gorgeous style and serves up a treasure trove of laughs. The sisters can’t stand the thought of losing their innocent big brother to a world of “carnal sin” and it leads to one magic battle after another under crazy circumstances every time as they match wits and spells with the cunning and sexy Ayumi. Throughout all of this, nice guy Haruo remains clueless. Even when he’s in the thick of it, there’s always one of those handy memory mallets to bonk him on the head with afterwards in order to protect him from the truth. The show is often over-the-top and revels in it in the best way. It’s in the same high praise pedestal of harem comedies like Love Hina, Girls Bravo and Maburaho. It’s racy at times and a laugh a minute throughout. It also makes sure to always add that dash of heartfelt sweetness to give the anime endearing warmth amidst the hilarity. It’s wonderful, playful frivolous fun.

Ayumi doesn’t only have the sisters as competition. There’s the beautiful student council president Yuri who has feelings for Haruo and a secret of her own. Since she’s not related, she may be a serious rival for Ayumi’s nefarious (and hilarious) intentions to gain Haruo’s heart. Oddly enough though, they often have to bond together. When a spell goes awry and the girls are all trapped in the dream world, they have to work together to save their collective behinds. There’s a time travel moment as they try to discover why sister Maika has such a brother complex. And later, when a panty thief is running around and aggressive peeping toms are close by, the girls come together to defeat the dastardly villains.

The final episode on this disc introduces another new character: Marin the Witch Hunter. This could be big trouble for the girls. Yet is seems she’s particularly interested in ‘purifying’ only the most evil of witches. Ayumi may have to watch her back. It lends to some great magic action, outright fights, and more hilarious mayhem in this stellar romantic comedy series.

Magikano holds especially glossy animation. With the ever increasing female cast, you can enjoy one attractive female character after another with the appealing character designs. Whenever the magic use is employed, it’s vivid and eye-catching. There is simply no room for disappointment in this outstanding anime.

With the English dubbed production, fans get to hear Jessica Boone play the villain in a turn about, known for voicing the sweet girls, she gets to sink her teeth into the villainess with heart, Ayumi, and sounds to be enjoying the role based on her performance.

Josh Grelle displays his talents in his first foray as an ADR writer for the show. He’s westernized some of the humor to great comedic effect in the English language version. Comedy is one of the most challenging of genres because even more important than the jokes is often the timing of them. The only criticism is the overuse of the “b” word. The rest is gold. It’s all about the timing first, jokes themselves second. And the timing of the gags and jokes here are perfect. Therefore kudos to him and to Chris Ayres ADR Director and the voice cast for producing such a brilliantly comedic and fun anime series in the dubbed version offered along with the original Japanese.

IN SUMMARY:
If you enjoyed Girls Bravo, Maburaho and Love Hina, you’ll love Magikano. Magikano is one of the funniest harem comedies and best looking since Maburaho and Girls Bravo. It’s a harem comedy delight. Madcap magic and crazy love make for perfect gut-busting comedy in Magikano!
