When the greater threat emerges, the enemy of my enemy is my friend…and Abel Nightroad seeks a safe path for all.
The entire 24 episode series on 6 discs in a beautiful Gothic box set. REVIEW: Inspired by the cult hit and internationally popular novels by the late Sunao Yoshida, This astonishing Gothic series is a feast for the senses. The music is incredible, the story captivating, and the visuals are some of the most incredible in animation today. The story quickly picks up a thread of intrigue that becomes a web of mesmerizing politics, deceit, and confrontations between the humans and the vampire race known as the Methuselah. The focus is narrowed at first on Abel and his first meeting with the young and innocent Esther. But quickly their lives become intertwined as they find themselves in the middle of a plot by the shadow organization known as The Order of Rosen Kreuz, who wish to topple the Vatican and the Methuselah empires and throw them both into a cataclysmic world war. The key to defeating them is Able and Esther’s secret mission, an envoy of peace, and a dangerous trip into the very heart of the Methuselah Empire. As the story grows to widen its scope onto the various groups and individuals striving for their goals – whether those goals be those of hope or annihilation, viewers are shown a world as spellbinding as it dangerous. The story builds to a moment of stunning discoveries about just who is behind what and why. The most amazing secret of all is the one held by Abel, the humble priest who hides his sorrow behind a gentle smile, and his true powers behind a bumbling façade. He and Esther have a destiny, one that this story unveils with broad strokes of brilliant story telling and genius animation. The animation, done by Gonzo who have done some of the most touted anime series of our decade with titles such as Last Exile, Chrono Crusade, Glass Fleet, Black Cat, and an ever growing stable of impressive titles, show their mastery of visualization and design in Trinity Blood. The neo-Gothic world is brought to dark and wondrous light with a mix of West and Eastern European feel to the designs of the clothes and cities, to a futuristic and riveting look at a future of vampires and humans who use incredible air vessels. The ship and mechanical designs from the producer of Last Exile, an anime filled with some of the most wondrous mechanical designs of any anime ever, shine and display some of that rare talent here in Trinity Blood when you see the large hulking dark metal beasts overtaking the sky. The most arresting sequence however is the one where Abel transforms into his other self. The blood scythe, the red eyes, the black wings, all appear in a beautiful, dangerous and utterly enthralling flow of darkness and danger. EXTRAS: Bonus DVD feature include clean opening and ending animation, Historical Artifacts which gives an overview of the historical and religious names, artefacts, and references made within the series, and trailers of other FUNimation titles. The box set packaging isn’t the usual slip case art box. Instead, Trinity Blood is offered in a box that opens more similarly to a jewelry box and inside you can lift out with a black flat broad piece of fabric, the three book-like cases that hold two DVD discs each. The art work on the covers of these cases and the wrap around splash in each case were ones done for the limited edition disc releases. The art work on everything shows the striking illustrations and rich art of the Gothic design the animation boasts. Also inside the box is a slip case, also with fine art work bearing an innate cross image on the case that holds all six of the booklets from the original releases. Each is a 24 page booklet that includes interviews with several of the Japanese voice actors, staff and crew, a look at a number of the characters, pages focusing on the backgrounds, landscapes and machinery, and a Trinity Blood Art Museum featuring various splash pages and cover art the show used as featured in various magazines, et al. The book has all kinds of images from the anime, character art, background images and machine designs. Spoiler warning: do not read the booklets until after you’ve seen the anime as they do give away some of the secrets, including part of the ending. IN SUMMARY: Trinity Blood is a darkly alluring and richly done story about vampires and humans in a future setting, using Gothic designs and powerful visuals that will captivate viewers. It is a must see for any vampire fan.
