Burst Angel is back with an OVA special that looks back on what events caused Meg and Jo to leave New York and come to Japan. It’s a side story focusing on the past and the beginnings of a momentous relationship as Burst Angel Infinity takes fans on a thrill ride of high octane action.
Set after the events of episode 14 in the TV series, Burst Angel Infinity finds the wild kids Meg and Jo returning to New York City to see their friend Shirley. But their visit meets with tragedy when they discover a psychopath has left their friend in intensive care fighting for her life. Now Meg and Jo hit the gritty streets of New York in search of the mad man who is targeting children. They may be angels, but in this case, they are angels of vengeance in search of justice for their fallen friend. Running the length of the average TV episode (about 25 minutes), this special reveals the events that led Jo and Meg to Japan. It gives a more in depth look at the circumstances that proved the foundation of their bond so clearly seen in the TV series. For those who have seen the TV show, you’ll get to find out not only why they left the U.S., but also how Jo got her hair cut and her trademark scarf. If you haven’t seen the TV series, this stand alone episode is enjoyable but a lot of it won’t make sense such as what is that glowing tattoo covering Jo, and what are cybots? But this is a solid action packed crime drama for Bakuretsu Tenshi (the Japanese name) fans. There are police cover ups, defiant heroines, and a stunning battle for the climax. Staying true to form, Jo and Meg remain a charismatic combination in the realm of heroines. Similar to Xena and Gabrielle from the Xena TV saga, Meg and Jo share a strong bond that can be interpreted either as an intense platonic relationship or as something more romantic. Either way, the Burst Angel duo confirm in this anime OVA just why they burst onto the screen and capture viewers’ imagination and attention. Done by Gonzo (Trinity Blood, Black Cat, Last Exile and more) the animation is superb. It stays true in every way to the TV series design. The action is great. It’s very slick yet somehow gritty at the same time. With vivid colors and death defying moments, it keeps up the intensity during the story and hits a high during the striking final moments of the violent confrontation between the girls and the true villain of the piece. There is a good deal of CG used to great effect, particularly during the many action sequences. True, the anime itself is short, but it is packed with adventure and the loaded bonus features help make up for the brevity of the OVA. EXTRAS: Bonus features run nearly 2 hours in length in total. There are FUNimation trailers, previews of the Burst Angel TV show, previews of the Burst Angel OVA, Battle Record which runs nearly an 1 ½ long and is a compilation covering the entire 24 episode series of the Burst Angel TV anime, ‘The Lightness and Darkness of Jo’ feature plays like a full length (25 minute) episode and collects a series of meaningful moments throughout the TV series revealing her light and dark sides, and the final feature is Ugetsu Hakua (Character Designer) Special. This final feature plays like a promo featuring Meg with a revamped opening theme and her looking very different, similar to how she did at the end of the TV series. Sei and the other Burst Angel members also have altered yet very recognizable looks. This almost appears like a promo for a new series. Dare fans hope? IN SUMMARY: Burst Angel Infinity is a must have for fans of the anime TV show. It’s a high octane thrill ride.
