Known in Japan as Meitantei Conan (aka Detective Conan) based on the manga and popular TV series, this is the 2nd movie in the adventures of the pint-sized detective.
It begins with a foreboding bad dream. Ran has a nightmare (aka Rachel in the English version), that her mother is going to be killed. When a murderer starts targeting people and Ran’s family may be on the list, Conan gets involved. But danger looms when it seems that he too might be one of those targeted for death! This film is a solid and well done detective movie. It gives fans early on a concise amount of background information on Conan and his situation so that people are brought up to speed on who he is, what the basis for his predicament is about, and the source and nature of all the neat James Bond like gadgets he has at his disposal. Therefore the movie works well as a stand alone. If you’ve never read the manga or have seen a single episode of the TV series, you’ll still be able to fully enjoy this film. As the story progresses and it is uncovered that a killer has targeted a number of people, the story is good at giving off convincing red herrings. The show is done intelligently so don’t be surprised if you can’t figure out who did it until the very end. It has great suspense, a lot of intelligent who-done-it twists and turns, and is a great nod to the film noire genre. Fans of detective shows will enjoy this movie immensely. There’s exciting danger, especially towards the climatic end which involves explosions, Ran trapped underwater, and smaller Conan desperately trying to save the life of the woman he loves but can never tell as he continues his search for the men who turned him into a child. First though, he has to survive this mystery and solve it before it ends him and everyone he cares about. For fans of the TV show and manga, there is a very nicely done moment between Conan and Ran under water when he’s fighting to save her life. Always the romance that can never be, it adds an air of melancholy even while viewers will irresistibly hope that he finds the cure to his condition to once again take Ran into his arms as he longs to do. It is a small part that displays the compelling story and thrilling animation for the series. It’s an enjoyable film. It’s decent theatrical quality animation for this movie. It has the feel of the manga designs and TV sensibility built up to a higher animation level. It’s smoother, sharper and quite eye-catching at times. Fans of the TV series will be thrilled. There’s a neat array of gadgets that prove essential to surviving the latest mystery for Conan and his friends. It’s a serious film and the content reflects that. The names of the dubbed English version keep the Americanized names for the film, such as “Rachel” for “Ran”. But the Japanese version has the subtitles displaying the original Japanese names. Therefore enthusiasts of either form can enjoy it equally. The ending theme song is offered in both an English dubbed version and the original Japanese, your choice. Options are always great. Note to fans: be sure to wait until the end of the credits. There is a short bit that reveals the comical reason behind why Ran’s parents separated. Take pleasure in the delightful song in whichever language you prefer, relax, and enjoy the denouement. EXTRAS: Bonus features include trailers of other FUNimation anime titles. IN SUMMARY: Case Closed the 2nd film is an intelligent who-done-it that will keep you guessing until the end. It’s a great homage to the film noire genre.
