"Fear is only the concern for an unknown future, and I sincerely hope my fears are unfounded. For there is a way before us that has every possibility of bringing about the type of carnage we have only heard about in legend." - Gennosuke.
Back at their house in Sekiyado, Tenzen is tended to by Kagura as he is now blinded. He wants to make his journey to Sunpu to learn the truth about the ninja war, but the Iga wish to claim victory for their own. When Saemon returns they will deport to Sunpu immediately. Hotarubi learns that Gennosuke and the others have been killed, yet Saemon still wonders alive and free and he was the one who killed Yashimaru. Consumed with grief and anger, Hotarubi vows she will track him and destroy him, though she will have to be careful as he is a master of disguise and would easily evade her attempts to kill him. Little does Hotarubi know that one so close to him can be so deceptive. Tenzen and the others are at Kuwana Port waiting for the rest of the Kouga, yet they fear the worst as Hotarubi and Reiki dono have not yet returned. Tenzen tells them they cannot wait any longer and must leave port beyond Tokaido Road though there is a passenger on board they had not vouched for. Oboro who is with Tenzen ponders on what Gennosuke said to her about the impending conflict between the Kouga five and the Iga seven, that if it came to it there would be war no matter how one felt about the other. When Koshiro tries to get her to come below deck as the seas become more choppy and treacherous she ignores instead wanting to experience the water around her. It is not long before Tenzen orders Akeginu to take Jingoro and go to the back of the boat, as he wants to speak alone with Oboro, and he does not want to be disturbed. Koshiro is also instructed to stand guard at the main cabin but no one knows why. Tenzen is troubled by Oboro's lack of faith in what they are about to face, and he needs her to understand her true purpose as an important member of the Iga clan. There is much action in this anime, and the sense parts during the episodes in the story revolve around Tenzen and Oboro with consequences, as she still thinks of Gennosuke, while Tenzen wants her to think of leading her people to victory as is her birthright and to bear strong heirs to an Iga family member. Within the storyline of warring clans and characters who continually are picked - off throughout the series, the fight is still on the cards yet the reality is this is still a love story between Gennosuke and Oboro, a pairing a life bond that cannot possible work unless both clans unite. This situation has no way of working as the running theme is conflict and the fact that many of both sides have been slain by the other already, and the animosity from this runs extremely deep. The animation in this fourth volume has a great amount of brightness in it that could be interpreted as hope for the two lovers. The attention to detail with the backgrounds and water rendering in particular shows its own beauty and perfection, capturing nature superbly. EXTRAS: Complete with this four episode series of Basilisk, there are behind the scenes of Basilisk 1 and 2 which give the watcher a greater understanding and enjoyment of the Basilisk series so far with some amusing dialogue from the Japanese voice actors that can have the viewer in stitches. The Basilisk text-less songs and trailers for other anime titles. IN SUMMARY: Tense, thrilling and enthralling.
