The latest loss has Hikaru put into a state. Can he recover from it to finish and claim one of the three pro positions? Ochi’s arrogance knows nearly no bounds but his own setback has him considering Toya’s offer of training. There’s only three weeks until he must face Hikaru in a match with the pro title as the prize. Players each have to face losses and deal with the pressure as the finals for the Pro Exams begin in the latest volume of Hikaru no Go.

Already by the second episode on this disc, one of the three pro spots has been claimed. Tensions are mounting as the games enter into their final rounds. A good amount of time is spent building up the mental tension of the players, each facing their own psychological and emotional obstacles. When the finals commence, it’s Hikaru versus Waya. The game might prove to be an upset for Hikaru. Meanwhile Ochi continues to get training from Tohya, but his overbearing ego chafes at Tohya’s fixation on Hikaru. It drives Ochi to frenzied distraction until he explodes. He exacts a bet from Tohya: if Ochi wins against Hikaru, he must now be recognized as Tohya’s rival. But what he failed to realize was that if he loses, then that cements Hikaru in that coveted position! Facing each other, when Hikaru finds out the boy he’s obsessed with facing has trained Ochi, will it upset the balance, cause Hikaru to lose focus and lose against Ochi? Things might be falling apart just when Hikaru needs to keep it together the most.

The start of the Go match between Ochi and Hikaru is the most tense and suspenseful game yet in the anime. But they aren’t the only characters given serious development and screen time this volume. There’s a little bit on Waya and the other Go players. There’s quite a bit of time spent on Isumi. He’s been hard hit by his losing streak and his confidence is flailing and failing in his time of need. He still has a shot, but it’s a long one. Can he recover his confidence in time? He has a lot riding on gaining a pro position, many of the players do. The added insights into their varying reasons of the individuals competing create a stronger compelling draw to the story.
