FUNimation Entertainment marks its first foray into High Definition entertainment by digitally remastering two movies from one of the most successful series in anime history: Dragon Ball Z. In this disc, Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan and its sequel, Broly: The Second Coming get’s the HD treatment in Blu-Ray.

In the first of the two movies, Goku and company must go against a legendary Super Saiyan on a distant planet.  Paragas, one of the remaining Saiyan, orchestrated his revenge against Vegeta by deceiving him saying that he named a new planet under his name, but it is in danger against a Super Saiyan that’s been attacking other planets. In truth, the planet is on a collision course with a comet, and at the same time, Paragas is losing his control over his son Broly, when his power is let loose it is very dangerous and has an extraordinary power for a Saiyan.

As for the second movie, Goku’s sons must go against Broly to save Earth. Somehow managing to survive the planet’s destruction, Broly’s Saiyan Pod landed on Earth, but ends up in suspended animation until the day he awakens from Goten’s cry, who were searching for the seven Dragon Balls with his friends. Broly who is looking for revenge against Goku, ends up facing Goku’s son, Goten and Gohan instead. Now facing their deceased father’s nemesis, are Goten and Gohan powerful enough to beat Broly, who their father barely defeated seven years ago?

This disc is Dragon Ball Z in a completely new level. Not only with the remaster treatment, but both movies come unedited, giving the already entertaining show some added intense scenes that fans can truly enjoy.  FUNimation who has the daunting task to clean each frame from the original 35mm, also gives the movies a 16:9 aspect ratio from the original 4:3 Full screen to give it a cinematic effect. The overall visual looks very stunning and clean, and an English Dolby Digital 5.1 accompanies the movies frame by frame in crisp quality. The simple menu that comes with the disc is also visually dazzling, as the art is sharp and the colors are very vibrant.

You don’t have to be a DB fan to enjoy these movies, but having a bit of a knowledge of the show’s background is when you can truly enjoy the stories potential. If there is one drawback that comes out of these, is that not all its fan base will be able to enjoy it in HD glory, as the majority of fans are still watching anime on DVD, but it is a start for FUNimation to bring their most popular title with the latest technology. However, having these movies in HD is sure to give you a different approach – an exciting feeling of watching Dragon Ball Z. You have not seen Dragon Ball Z until you have seen its potential on high-definition.
