SERIES SYNOPSIS:
Hunters are a special breed, dedicated to tracking down treasures, magical beasts, and even people. But such pursuits require a license, and less than one in a hundred thousand can pass the grueling qualification exam. Those who do pass gain access to restricted areas, amazing stores of information, and the right to cal themselves Hunters.
REVIEW:
Gon has managed to pass the exam. Off to try to find his long lost father, he and his fellow friend Killua go after a bounty on a dangerous group known as the Spiders. During their search they meet Kurapika who killed a Spider, he himself on a quest, one of revenge. Meanwhile Chrollo has gathered his fellow Spiders to plan a way to strike back…
This volume focuses much more on the Spiders than Gon and his buddies. I’m glad they did. This is one of the few series that leaves you wanting to focus more on the villains because they are simply that intriguing. The Spiders are a diverse group of individuals but they’re not just petty criminals. They have a sense of honor it would seem and are loyal to each other. Their individual talents are interesting and the added suspense of the fortune telling, knowing their fate and trying to circumvent it, makes for a deeply compelling volume. When Gon and his friends try a strategy to get the Spiders, things go wrong in interesting ways since the Spiders are currently trying to put plans of their own in motion, ones to escape their doomed destinies. Overall the manga displays a clean art style and creative character designs along with the exciting story.
Extras in this volume include the results of a character poll and short character backgrounds of the Spiders.

Hunter X Hunter is an exciting adventure series with intriguing characters and a suspenseful story telling style. It is from the award winning creator of Yu Yu Hakusho and Level E. This manga series has also been turned into an anime. |
