Shirou and Saber confront a new enemy with no idea of the events that will domino from it. Caster is a Servant of great witchcraft abilities and a conniving evil mind to match. Both Saber and Shirou face superior fighters and suffer a great loss when one of their own is taken. The kind and quiet Sakura is taken hostage and now they must do everything they can to get her back, even if it means going up against the most dangerous Servant they’ve faced thus far!

With Caster, the new threat, the anime series does a great job of building up how evil and twisted she is and then in the next episode, shows a sympathetic side to her. It doesn’t negate the danger they’re all in however. Saber must battle Assassin before she can face Caster. Unable to use Excalibur, she may have no hope of defeating the witch. When all seems lost, a new Servant appears, one that is Archer class and that Saber knows…The arrival of the Golden King gives the group an unexpected out with Caster but raises and even greater more pressing mystery. Just who is this Golden King? Saber has fought him before and his abilities are far beyond that of the typical Epic Hero.

The latest volume covers the Caster arc in one disc. She’s used primarily as a lead up to the arrival of this mysterious eighth servant. It opens the door to Saber’s past and pushes Shirou to realize just how deep his feelings for Saber truly are. Big surprises are in store, ones tied into not only the great Grail War of ten years ago and also a crucial link to Shirou. This epiphany gives rise to Shirou’s simple wish. When a Servant touches the Grail, they die. He wants to save Saber. But the cost for wishes is rising and Shirou might not be able to afford that which he wishes most.

This is an incredibly tense penultimate volume. It has some great action, especially the sword duel between Saber and Assassin. The trap in Caster’s lair has moments of high personal drama that will have viewers on the edge of their seats. Rin has a telling moment when she is faced with having to possibly kill Sakura in order to save them all. With the latest revelations about Saber and what happened ten years ago in the last Grail War, the story has built to a taut point of delicious suspense. The high quality animation adds beautifully to it all.
