The journey of the four musketeers to England will end in violent confrontation and tragedy for the young heroes. The penultimate volume of this mesmerizing supernatural tale of vengeance and loyalty will see that loyalty tested to the very marrow as the heroes are betrayed by one of their own and members within nations move to bring the world to war.

Maximilien has a revealing confrontation with Sir Dashwood of the infamous Hellfire Club. The outcome of their battle will impact Lia and D’Eon enormously and the aftermath will affect the fate of nations. The latest volume shows a lot more of Maximilien and his hopes and goals, but still one answer remains:  who murdered Lia? Even with this being the penultimate volume, so close to the end the anime series still keeps its secrets very close to the vest. Much remains a mystery even while secret societies are dismantled, kings rescind their thrones and documents reveal the true intentions of those in power. The bond between Maximilien and Lia remains one of two tortured souls. But the exact emotions tying Lia to him are still complicated and have yet to completely unravel. All these things will push the heroes to the brink of their own understanding of honor, loyalty, and love. At last near the end of their mission for their king, a betrayal most foul could overturn everything.

The complex political motivations in the story, blended with actual history, make this one of the most sophisticated and mature anime series today.  D’Eon is in a deadly maze of deception, backroom political machinations, and the twisted desires of those around him – not the least of which is that of his vengeful sister’s ghost! As he and his sister’s spirit become more ensconced within each other, will D’Eon be able to set his sister’s soul to rest and grant himself freedom from her possession? His love for her makes him want to cling to what he has of her, but that same thing is driving him perhaps to insanity. When he finally learns the truth behind Lia’s death will he find peace or madness?

This volume is a bit different from the others as it focuses more on the pivotal characters around D’Eon. Maximilien is shown from a different point of view and Durand as well. Even Robin and his anguish at what transpires, his questioning of what it means to be a knight, to have honor, tortures him. With so much having occurred, one thing only is certain: anything can happen in the final volume to come.
