Heaven comes from the same creative mind behind “Girl Got Game,” a previously released manga that many of you may have read before. The same style of artwork is a telltale indication of the author/artist’s presence, as is the well-developed sense of humour that this new series brings to the table. This series is a series about a not-so-normal girl that goes by the name of Rinne. Rinne is a girl who not only can see ghosts, she can exorcise them too! No need for any of this “I... I... I see dead people!” nonsense. And the tool of her trade? A paper fan of course. When she’s saved from becoming a ghost by the school punk, he ends up in a coma. Fortunately, that doesn’t stop their unique relationship from forging into a bond that’s literally out of this world. Rinne and her rescuer’s now-disembodied spirit must defend his prone body from being possessed by a muddled collection of local ghosts. When Rinne fails in her task, an ancient playboy takes over the school punk’s body – leaving him to inhabit a pink stuffed monkey! Are you following all this? In this wacky manga adventure, don’t be surprised if “anything goes.”
Heaven is leaning towards the shojo side, but contains a lot of humor and character that many other more “fluffy” titles lack. Ever wanted to see a girl get a pervert’s traditional nosebleed? Well, here’s your chance. Rinne has number of odd moments for a character of her type – all of which are very much welcome and hilarious. Believe it or not, there are even some moments of actual romance to be said of here – so “Heaven!!” plays many different tunes, keeping it interesting. The art is pretty interesting – the number of background patterns and tones turn the pages into intricate little works of modern-ish art. It certainly has a girl’s touch to it, but nothing that a male can’t appreciate! As mentioned, nose bleeds are funny – and even more so when said nose bleed is had by a girl. On the technical side of things, pages often get pretty frantic and pour on the text of all sizes. You may have to concentrate to get it all, but it certainly makes the book more exciting! The sequence of visuals flows well, and we’re treated to many full page images that help capture some of the more dramatic moments in this first volume of the series. IN SUMMARY: Heaven!! is the story of a girl, her ghost-exorcising fan, and her living stuffed pink monkey helper… who used to be a high school punk. Fun art and frantic story are fused together for a manga series with much potential for laughs and good entertainment value. |
