The last volume ended with one of the girls leaving under a mix of heartbreak and hard won peace of mind. This volume offers another such arc when it begins by focusing on the quiet Minagi Tohno and Michiru, her younger sister. Yukito finds his time at Misuzu’s must come to an end as their nearness causes Misuzu to have increasing attacks. Realizing his presence is what is disturbing her peace, he moves out and tries to put some distance between them – much to Misuzu’s sorrow. He grows closer with Minagi and soon discovers the heartbreak and sorrow that is a heavy cloud over her home. A mystery within a mystery, not only must Yukito try to figure out what his purpose and connection to Misuzu is, he now finds himself entrenched in the lives of the other people of this town. He tries to help Minagi and the mystery surrounding her is as deep as the ocean. In the end, can he truly bring peace to the girls he has come to know?
This is an arresting anime series. It is far from the norm of the regular anime formula as it can by not offering easy answers, action, or comedy. It is a drama that entails the mystifying secrets about the people in this small and seemingly idyllic place. A despair and growing sense of dread seems to haunt the females in this show, as if they have resolved themselves to an unhappy fate for the sake of others. But the truths, as they come out, are ones that are heart breaking and hold as much a sorrow as the sky is wide. But with that sorrow there is a thin thread of hope, like a stray bit of sunshine breaking through a heavily clouded day. Yukito may be tied into this. Whether it will be for the betterment of Misuzu remains to be seen. When Yukito comes to a determined resolution in this volume, it leads to an unexpected, inexplicable moment between him and Misuzu. Following it, the story is suddenly thrown into the past where a priestess known as the “winged” one is used to bolster a feudal lord’s power. She is tended to by a loyal female servant and a glib guard. When treachery breaks out, her friends choose to betray their orders and help the girl flee to find her family. It is a treacherous road, filled with peril. But what they find at the end shocks them all. How this all ties into the main story with Yukito and Misuzu remains to be seen, but it is sure to. After all, this girl, like Misuzu, has a dream of flying…. EXTRAS: Bonus features include ADV previews, and clean opening and ending animation. This second volume is also offered two ways: as the DVD only or the DVD with an art box to collect the entire series in.
