Hot on the heels of Ordinary Crush comes a story about Nanase, but not the Nanase from the high school, Freefall Romance features the older brother, Youichi Nanase. He’s deeply concerned over his attractive younger brother attending the mostly gay elite academy. But when he finds out his brother coming out, Youichi has to deal with his own prejudices and narrow minded concepts. To deepen his confusion, his colleague at work who’s been lending him a shoulder to vent his feelings is looking more and more attractive to Youichi. Could he be gay too? Confusion reigns but love may prove to rule supreme in Freefall Romance!
This stand alone yaoi romance from the same author who brought us Ordinary Crush, Spell, Lover’s Flat, and Sunflower, offers a down to earth romance between a man concerned about his younger brother, and a compassionate colleague who tries not to wear his heart on his sleeve. Although Renji is mature, he falls for Youichi quite quickly after their late night talks. After all, who can resist a beautiful man looking vulnerable and wide open? Renji certainly can’t. The question is can Youichi overcome his prejudices to open his heart to the deeper intimacy Renji longs to share with him? The grounded nature of this relationship is a nice change from the usual over-the-top drama of many yaoi. Youichi is sympathetic as a young man struggling to protect his brother while trying to come to grips with his own preconceived misconceptions and his newly aroused feelings towards his male co-worker. Curiously, even though his brother is the main topic of conversation, we see little actual interaction between the brothers until towards the end of the manga. It does serve as the powerful catalyst needed to open Youchi’s eyes, have him lean on Renji, and just maybe open his heart as well. All this and a genuine sense of fun make Freefall Romance an enjoyable read with solid art. IN SUMMARY: Freefall Romance is a down to earth yaoi tale of a concerned brother having his mind and heart opened to romantic possibilities. |
