Stepping into his grandfather’s shoes proves hard work for young Masahiro. Between ridicule from adults (who quickly turn to begging for his help when monsters appear), a possible vengeful spirit possession, and the young Lady Akiko in danger from demons, Masahiro must use all his training and abilities as an Onmyouji priests to save the girl he cares for and possibly the kingdom too! Princes Keiko has fallen ill. But her strange appearance late at night on Akiko’s grounds raises Akiko’s suspicions that something is wrong. Masahiro’s investigation has him stumbling upon just how terribly wrong everything really is. It is this story that takes precedence this volume, spanning most of these episodes. The story about a grudge, a powerful demon, and a woman’s resentment, all put Lady Akiko in peril and young aspiring Onmyouji priest Masahiro up against the wall when his powers are tested to there utmost limits. Even his spirit/demon companion Guren seems helpless against the evil at hand. The battle displays not only one woman’s resentment however, but those of at least one of the shikigami that serves Masahiro’s grandfather as well. He dislikes Masahiro, considering him weak and an unworthy successor to the great Seimei. Therefore when the battle turns dire, will the shikigami help or hinder a wounded Masahiro? With the latest dangers, this volume reinforces the underlying story first touched upon in volume 1 – that of the foreign demons. They’re rustling up a great deal of trouble in this set of episodes and are proving that they will be a force to contend with at least for some time to come. They’ve also taken quite an interest in Masahiro, which bodes ill for him and those around him. They’re true motives however, remain unknown so far. They’re menacing presence gives the anime added stamina, suspense and action. EXTRAS: Bonus features include Geneon previews, clean opening animation, cast and staff credits, and reversible cover. IN SUMMARY: Shonen Onmyouji is proving to be a suspenseful fantasy series overflowing with various demons, spirits and gods. |
