Gojyo comes back to the Inn to find his friends laid on the floor dead, the room in complete disarray. Stood there, he ponders on how this could have happened when a nearby voice informs him that he actually got what he wished for. As Gojyo reflects, he remembers the day's activities clearly. Hakuryu was ill and needed treatment for a fever or cold and is exhausted as they have been making use of him too often and he needs a break.
Gojyo is sent on an errand to purchase supplies before they leave the Inn. Unhappy about being sent, he sees a young boy being threatened by a gang of unruly looking thugs. Naturally Gojyo intercedes in his usual brash manner and tackles them head on. Once the boy is free of them, Gojyo buys him a drink and tells him he should be on his way as he is well dressed and will attract the wrong kind of attention as folk will think he has money on him. He talks to him and he mentions his parents are dead, though he has a brother who is not with him. Goku and the others think he is taking too long in bringing back the supplies. Then they hear a knock at the door, assuming it to be Gojyo, when a whirlwind dashes through the room instead. When Gojyo gets back, he sees they are all dead on the floor as he saw before. And the voice turns out to be the boy he rescued from the thugs in the street. He says he gave him what he wanted as he had described the ones he lived with as not being his friends when they treat him more like an errand boy. The boy tells him he is Kinkaku, and has all the looks now of a demon and there is a dark demon who holds him. Kinkaku says he seeks to destroy all those who he thinks are bad people or who Gojyo does not like. Kinkaku replies that it is just his way of thanking him for helping him flee the thugs that day. Ready to fight the boy and his demon counterpart, he finds out the one who holds him much to his amazement is Kinkaku's brother. His staff in hand, he intends to fight him when a very much alive Sanzo wakes up, pointing his gun at the boy, wanting to know where he got the gourd he uses for his devilish magic. No sooner has Sanzo shot at him, than they burst through the window and onto the rooftop to safety. The green gourd Kinkaku was holding is some kind of consciousness drainer and when Sanzo recounts the story to Gojyo he is interrupted while Gojyo remarks they must still be alive. Gojyo feels he must take it on himself to clean up the mess he started by going to find Kinkaku and his demon brother, but when Sanzo says he will come too all the arguing starts and so does all the fun. The one-liners come thick and fast with pronounced humour at the right time in the episodes. The characters in tight situations keep the viewer more than suitably entertained. This fifth volume is all to be expected from the Sanzo party, and the introduction of a new enemy makes it a must to watch. There is a great clarity to the animation. The scenes are well animated and the characters as flawless as before. EXTRAS: Commercial Collections (Gojyo version), Textless Ending (version 2), Original Ending (version 2), Trailers and DVD credits.
IN SUMMARY: Impressive non-stop humour - don't blink or you will miss too much. Excellent!
