Tomari witnessed the kiss between Hazumu and Yasuna. Confused by her own feelings, she puts distance between her and her long time friend Hazumu, lest she say something she should not, dare not say. But as Hazumu and Yasuna grow closer, Hazumu is pained by Tomari’s distance, and a recalled childhood promise brings the boy-turned-girl running to Tomari’s side. A surprising confession is just the start of the latest volume in this romantic tale of maidenly love.

Kashimashi continues to enchant with this gentle, at times bittersweet, tale of love unrequited, discovered and recovered. Just when it seems Yasuna and Hazumu have found each other, Tomari steps onto the stage to lay her heart out for Hazumu to see. This unusual trio shows some poignant moments of compassion between the rivals in love, Yasuna and Tomari. They each invite the other with Hazumu to events such as the beach, a trip through the school at night to test their courage, and a festival filled with fireworks and kimonos. It seems at time that these two rivals understand each other’s feelings more than Hazumu does. Meanwhile Hazumu struggles with her inability to choose between her lifelong friend Tomari, and the girl she also cares for, Yasuna. This indecisiveness weighs heavily on Hazumu, to the point of tears and anguish. Realizing this, Tomari and Yasuna don’t demand anything of Hazumu except her happiness and her company. But time is passing and Hazumu will have to choose which heart to keep and which she must, however regrettably, break.

This volume also gives insight into the quiet and astute observer of the group – Ayuki. Through pivotal realizations in her childhood to some revealing phrases in these episodes, we discover that she is not as indifferent as she seems. Indeed, her heart also holds a gentle love for someone close.

A spellbinding tale of innocent love, the anime still manages to throw in some cute humor, especially with reappearances of the man-hungry teacher, and the scary walk through the school at night. There are often laughable moments with Asuta, particularly during the beach episode, when he fantasizes about his best buddy-turned-girl.

EXTRAS:
Bonus features include clean ending animation, previews, and Kashimashi: Portraits of People featurette. Running just shy of fifteen minutes each, these two original Japanese features contain video discussions between Kana Ueda (Hazumu) and Masumi Asano (Ayuki) in the fist one. And in the next one it is Kana Ueda with Daisuki Ono (Asuta).

IN SUMMARY:
Kashimashi is a heart warming and occasionally bittersweet tale of pure love. It will charm you.
