REVIEW:
There’s something comforting about 2D animation. I guess with so much stuff being computer generated now, it’s great to see the hard work of line art and the classic style that really is what animation is, was, and at its essence will always be, like in this here Yu Yu Hakusho series. It’s a straight up, pull no punches fighting anime.  The gang managed to just get out of that whole Dark Tournament thing by the skin of their teeth when – look out!- some nasty humans with fierce psychic powers are set to do some damage. They’re going to break through the realms separating the demon world from the human world and they need one of the spirit detectives to do it!

It’s cool formulaic excitement! All 14 eps in this collection cover the big build up to what might be the big bang if Yusuke and the troops don’t hustle and bustle. There are seven nasty villains and one by one the spirit detectives have to face ‘em all. There’re a couple of especially gruesome bits in this set of episodes. There’s the hospital of horrors with the creepy guy justly called the Doctor. He captures Yusuke’s pals and one of Yusuke’s gang might fall to never rise again! There’re dismemberments going on, a lot of gashing and blood spurting happening in this arc. Later on, cool Kurama (and who knew a rose whip could be just that cool?) goes up against a big opponent and takes him out with this brutal move. Kurama does some major damage in this arc and really steps up to the plate. Dragon dude Hiei is absent through a lot of eps until he comes in swinging…at Yusuke! That’s right! The two throw down!

Mostly though, the show keeps its eye on the tunnel. It’s like a ticking bomb that keeps getting dialed up to go off sooner than the team expects. First it’s two weeks, then two days, then two hours (I guess the writer likes the number two) until humans are overrun by the biggest, baddest and most evil demons the underworld has. With the whole thing being plotted out by a former spirit detective gone bad, its Yusuke the Good versus Sensui the Bad as these two protégés turned spirit detectives (and Sensui turned into the big evil) move to a head on collision.

A lot of this chunk of episodes plays out almost like a video game formula. Big time considering when they go up against the Game Master, they have to play life sized win or die virtual games. There’s even one game that’s a shout out to Tetris. Don’t expect to know the big climatic outcome between Sensui and Yusuke this collection though, that will be in the next volume. And keep your eyes peeled for an old enemy to show his ugly head!

EXTRAS:
Extra goodies include clean opening and closing animation, FUNimation trailers, and short little character profiles.

IN SUMMARY:
Yu Yu Hakusho is great action and pull-no-punches excitement! This time around the Heroes dig up a lot of trouble when they go after the bad guys making a tunnel to let in the demon hordes!
